Double Gun Style Prefernce!!
      #78686 - 15/05/07 11:59 AM

What style Double do you prefer??

Take the survey!!

Assume all the Doubles are the same caliber for DG(caliber doesn't affect choice)-?470 NE or your preference

First question refers to solely hunting the rifle, not collecting!!

The second question refers to collecting and occasionally hunting.

Hey--

I did put a "none shown" option if the Doubles shown are not Plain Jane/economical enough to hunt!!

Guess the makers of C-are not doing alot of business!!

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=52422&an=0&page=2#Post52422

So what's up- none of you guys want your picture and likeness on the triggerguard so you can make a wallhanger out of it? Didn't the guy from the TV series Dallas put his face on an H&H??

Overall I think alot of good choices. The Purdey was sure popular as a collector Double!!I would love to have one.

I voted D in both cases! Too much bling on the others!

The Purdey in both cases. No matter how nice the wood or engraving if its in my hands it gets shot and shot a lot!

I chose the Purdy for both also. No matter how fancy it is it is still a Purdy.

I chose D on both polls. If someone else was paying for it or I was very rich it would have been the Purdey.

I luv to have the Purdey but I agree totally with previous comments suggesting it would be far better without the cartoonish animal scenes and with additional engraving--

Further Double question based on ignorance.

Does any current manufacturor of new Doubles make their gun with a doll's head 3rd fastener or similar device?

I don't know how much it benefits the Double but it looks to strengthen the action from exploding open from misfires and align the action/barrels while closing. etc.I like that unique feature.

Gentlemen,

decided to vote NS since this great double for some reason wasn't included. http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=78721&Main=54782#Post78721

Purdey with a crisp rose and scroll & engraving would have been my second choice, lion from Oz look ridiculous while elephant is not that badly engraved. Bullino wears off quite easily and slightly deeper engraving would be my choice.

I voted for the Watson on both, even though I'd rather have it in .470 (or .500, maybe) and it seems a bit heavy.

Marrakai--

Thanks much for the pictures--great repro!!

Heym surely does appear to have some type of 3rd fastener.

Guess there are no new Double gun makers replicating the dolls head and similar 3rd fastener.I think they look neat and classy.Must be the cost or modern steels showing pressure data that shows the such devices do not benefit the strength of the action or benefit its alignment upon closing.Logic would seem to conflict with that but--

Makes one wonder if the older guns with older steels really needed the 3rd fastener as a safety b/u when proofing/shooting the gun.

Johan- I would agree on the appeal of the Mckay Brown, I would be hard pressed to choose between it and the Purdey.

I have to agree. I think some members have a case of "sour grapes" about the embellishment of this Purdey.

While I will admit it would be a beauty with standard Purdey style rose and scroll over case colors, I find nothing offensive about this heavy scroll and bulino.

That rifle could find a place in my gun cabinet any time (if only I could afford it)!

So yes, I voted for the Purdey in both instances.

No flies on the others either. Personally I don't like the pimped-up .600NE. It's way beyond the Purdey. I guess my level of "pimp" tops out somewhere in-between. (Let's see - white silk suit, gold tie, black and white patent leather shoes, Panama hat, big gold bling chain, ear ring, gold watch and chain, big gold Rolex. . . . .) Sorry! just thinking out loud!

Just LOVE "D", by the way.

Hopdoc- I would easily choose the McKay over Purdey, every time. Trigger plate action is very interesting and I wouldn’t miss the sidelocks for 1 min.

CptCurl- any chance you are related to Liberace? Sour grapes, hardly If I wrote it was beautiful I would be a liar- fortunately Bulino engraving is easy to remove

Guess it's all about brandwashing

Westley Richards build guns and rifles with a dolls head and H&H rifles have a third bite like the Heym.I would agree with Johan that the McKay-Brown rifles are very nice and the action is stronger than a sidelock.

The Purdy for pure hunting. I would guess it is the most reliable; just because it is new and a Purdy.Relibility is the most important issue when hunting mean buggers, isn't it. It also needs some of that shine taken off it. For collecting and some hunting; the George Gibbs. It has that history, romance, nostalgia and also pedigree about it. IMO that's what collecting these sort of firearms is about.

For serious hunting, and shooting for grins, the Gibbs, hands down, followed by the Watson. I wouldn't be interested in hunting with the others.

For collecting, I'd want the best quality of workmanship, and the action type I like best. That means the Gibbs again. I don't like sidelocks.

This kind of exercise has me reaching for my wallet - and heading off to the Lotto counter at the gas station.

Voted for the Purdey though, if the MacKay Brown were listed, that would have been my selection.

Good hunting!
