Electronic Hearing Protection
      #77392 - 25/04/07 03:53 PM

I've long thought about getting a pair of some sort of electronic hearing protection.

After a good hunting trip this weekend, where I was almost deafened by an SKS being shot repeatedly next to my right ear, I've decided to save what hearning I have left.

Do you guys have any recomendations?

I hunt mostly in hot weather, so I don't need warmth. Also I'm looking for protection from both my firearm and also friend’s firearms going off when hunting. So I need something convenient to leave in/on my ears throughout a long days hunt to protect from the odd shot here and there that’s either too close to my ear, and my own shooting.

With a combination of foam plugs AND muffs I'm pretty good for lots of shooting at the range. I'm only looking for the high tech stuff for hunting.

I've heard good things about: ESP, SportEars, Peltor.

hi chasseur

i have usede the peltor stereo unit muffs for 5 years now and no complaints at all, snug fit and long batteri life and the abilety to turn them way up in hunting situations is really working for me.

and they use normal aa batteries that you can get at any gasstation.

Chasseur,

I've owned a few electronic muffs. An old Peltor Tactical, a newer Sordin "Supreme Pro", and the Peltor "Comtac".

The best protection was with the Peltor Tactical, but the sound wasn't too good back then (I'm sure they have an upgraded version now). The Sordin has good sound, but I have found it to be a bit too tight on my head, which kind of squeezes my ears too much. So I've given it to my wife, as they fit her better. Finally, the Peltor "Comtac" is what I've ended up using most, as it fits me best. The only downside is that I feel the electronic sound isn't able to be amplified as much as with the Sordin.

Whichever you decide to look at, I'd suggest you try them all on for more than a couple of minutes, to see what you feel is most comfortable. This is important if you want to wear them for any extended time while hunting or shooting.

Erik
