Incredible Dan Hunsaker : the Big 5
      #77351 - 25/04/07 01:11 AM

Our friend Dan Hunsaker sent this message :

"The Big Five with a bow is now done. Perfect shot, went 60 yards, and 21 seconds to expiration.

After this bad boy I can say enough is enough. You can push the envelope only so far before these guy’s bite back.

Dan"

Isn't it fantastic?

Well Done Dan!

I was wondering the same thing, what are those circular deals on the end of the arrows?.....guards of some sort?

Big Lion, and he looks like he's been in a fight or two which is also nice.....any idea where in Africa it was taken?

Interestingly, referring to the Lion's age thread, see how hard it might be to age the animal in bad light through binos......

The broadheads should be in the top of the quiver, the circular deals appear to be where the fletching should be??? Are they some new age type of fletching? Looks like they would be some type of flu-flu if that were the case...

Very interesting.

What are those things!

The turbin on the end of the arrow is a FOB : The FOB is a single part that replaces any type of three or four fletch application, either vanes or feathers that are normally applied to arrow shafts.

look at the Fob link, there are pics of Dan's trophee all over the website

Interesting concept but I don't think the FOB would work with most rests. Certainly not with my Whisker Biscuit. I wonder why Dan chose to use them? Do they sponsor him at all or is he pro-staff?

Hi Ann

I was thinking to You this afternoon when seeing (again and again) Buzz Charlton DVD.

Dan is in good terms with Mr Morris, chairman of starlight archery, they both live in Tucson
Perhaps he is sponsored by starlight.
But even though PSE & AR bows are based in Tucson, he is a Matthews fan.
The FOB is to be used only with fall down rest. I am testing these FOBs and I get terrific groups.....unfortunately.
That means that the Fobs are devasted by the broadheads (eclipse broadhead). One must use a target with many bulleyes

one bulleyer for each arrow.

500 grains is the most pampered : in Salt Lake city are based Hoyt, Reflex, Benman and Easton.

So Jean Bernard, out of curiosity, what happens when arrows fitted with these FOB fletchings strike game? Do they pass through or do they stop at the point of contact with the FOB?

Ann,
Not to steal JBs thunder but when the arrow is a pass through the FOB detaches and generally lands very close to point of impact.Pretty cool actually, and makes marking the point of impact quite easy.

Ah, Dan, neat, I did not know they detached! I just could not picture how these things functioned on an arrow, thanks for the explanation!

Congrats again on that great lion! I hope you will post your story.

Congratulations Dan on your Big 5 with a bow. Truly a remarkable achievement and one to be very proud of.

What sort of velocity gains are you getting after switiching to the fob's?

Bulldog,
In my opinion velocity gains for hunting purposes are not a big part of the selection process for me. The arrow speed is going to depend on what I am hunting. BIG game, 800 grain arrow, fairly slow speed, 250+-fps. The big guys are not going to jump the string and you are NOT taking 40+ yard shots. Small stuff with lightening type reflexes (Impala, Am.Antelope, Warthog, Duiker) that seem to dodge bullets are a different story. 400 grain arrows sailing at 295 fps help but are no guarantee with these little 4 legged nightmares. Here the speed helps me with my poor yardage estimates.
With that being said I personally gain approx. 10fps.. I say approximately because conditions in the field ie: hunting, dictate the real results, and I don't usually have a chronograph with me during a stalk.
I believe someone asked if I was sponsered. No, not by anyone. I don't need any added pressure to succeed . That would diminish the fun on my hunts, and that, for me, doesn't work. I will confess that Paul at Starrflight (FOB) does give me all the fob's I want.
I would like to thank everone for their congratulations and compliments. I have been humbled by the accomplishment, attention, and noteriety I have recieved over my Big 5. I still can't believe I did it.
