Help with the value of this gun
      #77223 - 22/04/07 10:34 PM

I have opportunity to purchase this gun. It is a W.J.Jeffrey .475 No 2 J. The dealer believes it was made in the 1920's. Assuming that the gun is in excellent condition, what would the value be on it? It comes with bass, bullets and reloading dies.

Thanks,
Darrin

Looks great, but it must have been refinished. Do you know who did the work? What do the bores look like? How does it shoot?

My best guess: US$ 22K to 24K if the bores are good, shoots well and the refinish was done by someone reputable.

I'd agree with 500grains and would mix in the following to the determination: Is it a 'working' gun or a higher grade weapon? I can't tell from the photos, but while any DR in this caliber and in good condition is worth the price he suggests, assuming the condition described and, if refinished, done 'right' (a well done refinishing leaves the gun with the markings crisp and looking near original, the wood and color looking right, etc.) If it is a higher grade, is it engraved and if so, what percentage, case colors, etc? All of these are additional factors that can raise the price over a 'base' working gun in like condition. Also, it is a gun from a well-recoginzed maker in a 'collectible' chambering. That too adds to the potential price. Dave

It's not so much the Colour Case Hardening that makes me think
it has been refinished but the stock.

It is the wrong type of wood copared to what an "old gun" would have on it but it is also just too new and unblemished.

I don't have a problem with restocks or refinishes, as long as they are done well.

Their are those who don't like restocks but if they broke the stock on their double rifle I am sure they would get it restocked !

Just my HO.
