I have a problem O/U rifle, calibre 9.3 x 74R, when shooting factory Norma Alaska 286 gr ammo, each barrel groups well but are out vertically. Will an increase or decrease in velocity pull the two groups together?

John

If they're shooting apart, barrel time is too long and you need to either increase velocity or decrease bullet weight. However, the limit is (over)pressure and if that happens, you must consider re-regulation of the bbls. (sometimes, changing bullet and powder may help). After I had my FN O/U scoped, I had the same problem and, wanting to stay with the Alaska bullet, I had my rifle re-regulated and fitted with a new (longer) wedge. All is fine now and both bbls. shoot in the same hole at 50 m.

Hello John,

My email is malfunctioning at this moment, so I'll post my answer.

Your Zoli seems to be grouping exceptionally well, considering the different factory loads.

Regarding the Ferlach,, the 285's shooting apart indicate too long a bbl. time and just the opposite with the 232 crossing. You might decrease velocity of the latter but it would be impractical/dangerous to increase the charge of the former.

What I believe is that your Ferlach was regulated with German RWS ammo (285 or 232 ?) and you might invest in a box of each weight to check them out (BTW, chances are your future Merkel will also be regulated with the same RWS ammo).

Hopefully this will do as the other alternative is to engage in load & components testing, short of re-regulation with your choice of ammo.

Keep me posted about the results.
