Hello All,

As a combination 50th birthday/anniversary/xmas/fathers day gift from my wonderful wife I will very soon be ordering my first double rifle. I've already decided on the make so no need to beat that horse. I've narrowed the caliber(s) down to 2: .500/.416 my caliber of choice or the venerable .470.
Being that I already own a .375 H&H and a .458 Lott I was looking/wanting something in the "upper mid range " caliber thus my choice of the .500/.416.

My question is: in the places of the world where one would most likely use this rifle for it's intended, how available is .500/416 ammo? Does someone else make it besides WR?

I realize with the .470 I can have the gun manufacturer regulate the barrels with Federal ammo which is readily available here in the states along with the fact that ammo of other makes would be fairly easy to acquire else where if needed. As for the .500/416 I'll most likely reload for it, which begs the question of component availability. Who is a good source of cases and dies?

Any information is greatly appreciated and I hope the opinions expressed stay civil.

What do you plan to use your DR for? That's the first and most important question and must be answered first. Then you target a caliber, then consider what ammo is more available in the caliber range of your choice.

Obviously, the .450/.400 3" is up and coming, with Hornady on the edge of making ammo available and Ruger with the No. 1. I wouldn't rule that cartridge out.

But if you are set on the two cartridges you mentioned, there's no question the .470NE is far more available than the .500/.416.

Most likely I would use the gun for buffalo, big eland, hopefully a lion someday, and maybe a big brown bear or moose in Alaska. Probably way over kill on the moose. The .458 Lott I have will do everything the .470 will and then some so I don't think I really ned to go larger. As I said I was looking for something in the upper middle range of calibers. Besides I've always liked having something a bit different.

Very unlikely.

In some places in Africa you can find a few rounds of .470 if you scrounge around.

And resale on a .470 is much better.

Not a question that the .470 will be much more readily available in regards to ammo. For what you stated you will use the rifle for, I would choose the .470. However, having already been there I would get a .500, but that is just me. On my experiece there is really no significant difference in recoil and you pick up around 700 ft.lbs more energy at the muzzle.

As to reloading supplies, I recently purchased a set of RCBS dies from a firm out of Idaho. I will check to see if I can find the info, but all I did was a search on the net and found them fairly quickly. As to reloading supplies, MIDWAY has quite a bit on their web site for various calibers. SUPERIOR out of Sturgis,South Dakota.. will reload and regulate ammo to your double as well.

The 470 and 500 will always be more available and will do anything the other caliber will offer with less bother as far as finding fodder.

One point on the new Hornady loads, I understand they may not duplicate the original loading and may require some regulation in older guns. I know that the company has not released the product yet, but advance batches are on their way to some companies in Europe, particularly Heym so they can test and regulate the new production doubles in this chambering. No need for a big bore with that list. Add elephant and go with the 470, ammo isn't that tough to find, imo. Or keep the list and think about the 450/400. Ammo will eventually be easy to find.

I hope you are very happy with your new rifle.

If I wanted under 45 cal I'd opt for 450/400

3" regulated with the new Hornady amuunition.

If I wanted 45 cal or more it would be a 500NE.

All those with experience in Africa report 470 NE

is easiest to get there, NOT easy to get, easiest.
