Shooting kangaroos in WA
      #76263 - 12/04/07 11:13 AM

My brother and I have recently gone through the requirements to get commercial shooting permits for kangaroos in WA. The problem is we only know properties that ar 4 hours or more away from Perth. Could anyone help us with a few properties a bit closer in?

Maybe a bit of driving and door knocking required
with a professionally presented information sheet
typed up and left with them, even if they say no.

It takes hard work to get the first property but
bend over backwards and "do the right thing" and
word of mouth will get you onto heaps of others.

If you can "help out" with some labour occasionally,
it can go along way to getting access to places nearby.

Just my HO but it worked for me - although I don't shoot professionally but the principles the same.

You will find most properties on which commercial shooting of roos is possible are probably already sewn up.

Can I ask, is if you have a permit for commercial shooting of roos, does that give you personally the right to take XX numbers of roos? In South Australia I believe it is the opposite, where the property has the tags or permits and the professional shooters used the properties allocation. Maybe it is different in WA?

Four hours away in South Aust would be quite close to the Capital City for properties where commercial roo shooting could be done. There would be many that close, but most commercial roo shooting would be done a lot further out in the true outback stations.

About the only way to find the property would be to do a lot of door knocking as 500Nitro suggests. A lot of work perhaps for little result but you never know.

Another way would be to "purchase" a list of properties with an introduction to the land owners from a retiring roo shooter.

There are two types of permits for shooting kangaroos in WA. Farmers can get aprovals to shoot x number of roo's if they are causing damage which sounds similar to the SA system. These approvals are assessed on a case by case basis. I'm not 100% sure but I think roos shot under these permits must be left where they fall.

The other type of approval is for approved shooters. They can buy tags to shoot roos within areas there is an open season. These roos can be transported to processing facilities for pet meat etc... The shooters must do a course on meat hygiene and pass an accuracy test. Vehicles must also be given a tick by the Health Dept.
