African Elephants Attack

Tourists trigger elephant attack. As a result two were injured and one was killed.

it's a sorry story but these people were stupid and unfortunately deserve what they got. One cannot harass elephant this way and get out unscathed.
This is typical of the Disney syndrom.

Nature in it's purest, survival of the fittest and the smartest ones. The elephant won.

The most useful lesson would be to know the name of the miserable outfit that sends his clients to an inevitable slaughter

Couldn't agree more. Far too close, boh in the water and
on the bank.

It was interesting that some of the elephants showed
distress while they were in the water but obviously couldn't or didn't attack there.

Stupid people with the what I call the ZOO syndrome
where people forget they are wild animals.

Those people deserved to get stomped. They were clearly stressing the elephant, and especially the calves. I'd like to know who the guides were, and who they worked for.

The elephants and calves were distressed in the water.

The tourists were idiots and should have bugged out.

Big suprise--If you provoke wild animals you risk suffering the consequences.

"Zimbabwe offers opportunities for observation of wildlife in its natural habitat. Many tour operators offer structured, safe excursions into parks and other wildlife viewing areas for close observation of flora and fauna. However, even animals marketed as “tame” should be respected as wild animals and travelers should keep a safe distance from animals at all times, remaining in vehicles or other protected enclosures when venturing into game parks. A foreign tourist died in August 2005 after an attack during a “lion walk” at a game preserve near Harare. In 2004, an American tourist was killed by a crocodile while in a canoe at Mana Pools on the Zambezi River. It is a good idea to ascertain whether operators are trained and licensed. However, U.S. citizens participating in nature excursions in Zimbabwe should be aware that even organized and licensed tour operators may encourage or allow tourists to participate in activities that could pose great risks to personal safety."

When I posted the link I hadn't watched it myself yet as it takes a while to download. I think Erik sent the link to me.

You can feel it is going to happen watching the short video film. I think there is nothing wrong to filming elephant swimming in the river as long as a reasonable distance is maintained. But you just knew these idiot guides were going to cross in front of the swimming elephants!

Then to cap it all off, they rest their boats against the shore only 20 metres or less from where the elephants with young are getting out of the water. Some of the adults definitely are showing warning signals as they stop and stare at the humans. Because you already know what is going to happen you are surprised when they turn and climb the bank. Then of course it happens .....

It would be informative to know whom the tourist company is or was, but hopefully they are no longer in business.

The tourists though show the typical "plastic monkey" syndrome.

PS Some of the adults definitely are showing warning signals as they stop and stare at the humans.

For this trip there are only the two of us and Future, the guide. It isn't a jet boat trip like we know it from New Zealand and Fiji, this is more of a wildlife cruise than an adrenalin trip. With its shallow hull, the jet boat can navigate narrower channels than any other river craft, thus getting closer to wildlife. The area is full of colourful birds, and we see some monkeys frolicking in the trees. I desperately want to see a crocodile, and right on cue there are three resting on the banks of the river. Hippo can be seen everywhere in the river. It used to be that hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal, but these days that title goes to the mosquito.

On one of the islands there is a herd of five elephants drinking down by the river's edge. Future navigaes the boat right up to the bank to get really close to them - so close that we can almost touch them - but in my eagerness to climb on to the front of the boat to get even closer, I make a noise and scare them away.

Fortunately there are a few more around the corner, and they seem totally oblivious to our presence as they are ahving a drink and a sand bath on the banks. Lunch is provided for us - with Zambezi beer of course - on an island in the middle of the river. Chicken, ham, rolls, salad, potato salad and fresh fruit for dessert.
