This is my Ruger nr 1 in .450 Nitro Express

It is custombuildt by Ragnar Hansen, a gunsmith over here in Norway upon an barreled action of a Ruger nr 1 Tropical in .458 Win Mag.

The rifle has an Fajen Black Walnut stock, with a wide Beaver forend ,so it its a working rifle tha ti got used for a good price, it came with dies.
6 boxes of bullets, 5 of the, was Woodleigh soft nose 480 grain 30 cases, so i need more cases, and when the spring comes more bullets will be tested.

I have also a set of Warne rings that i will mount a scope on it . I`ve had it for nearly 3 years, but due to various factors like illness and rehabillitaion i havent had chance to get out on hunting. Yet......

This was the first nitro Express round and after severals opinion, the best of the NE rounds. Hopefully it will be brougt back by an gun factory with visons enough tha teverything isnt 2 inches long and propels an 130 grain bullet at 12000 feet or so it seems

yes ill try it this season, but i need new sights on it, i want an v sight and a good front sight m like the clssic safari sights.

Its almost i need to use an magnifying glass to take an look on the front sight.:)

I got an advice about tryiing the 550 grain Woodleigh to load it to 2100 feet , that would give good ballistic in the game and enough momentum to make it a good stopper on everything of game that moves on this planet

I will get some new sights on it, as well as some more touches, but i think it can handle almost any situations on hunting, so for me its alsmost perfect.

It will handle most situations. The 450-3,1/4 was my first nitro when I got into all of this. Then, I decided bigger was better-lol. But yes, the .450 is a dream of a gun for a lot of reasons.
I always loaded 4831 with no filler.
Easy to load for.
Today though, I personally prefer bigger thumpers for dangerous species. I graduated to a .500 3" just recently, and to me, even this is light, and I am having a .600 built on a custom falling block. In a .450 bore, my absolute fav is the 458 Lott, but thats a different story.
The .450 will do very well for you. It is all that is needed when hunting with back-up.
for a loner who hunts alone like me-I like the .500. The .600 is just going to be for kicks, and not for continuous carry.
But, like me, if the big bug bites you, then the .450 might start looking very small.
But, don't let that bug get to you, because the .450 will do everything it's supposed to and more.
You'll love it.

What is your load for the .450NE using 4831? Which 4831?

I use the load from the straight conversion 1.33xC---IMR4831---93.1grs.-no filler. Depending on cases, there may be a little rattle-room left, and you might want to go to an even 95 grs., which is snug.
Anything less than the 93.1, might constitute having a little filler.
H4831 might give better density with the 93.1 grs., however I've never used this brand in mine, although I've heard it takes up a very "tiny" amount more space.
Also, this is considering a traditional 480-woodleigh. For other weights, it starts to become more confusing. And, also, it depends on your double and where it's shooting with this. This should be in the ballpark, if it's stamped for 480-70C. I say this, because at the moment, I'm using my loads in custom falling block actions I'm building up, and have not, nor will have to do any regulation testing, which is great from a headache standpoint. I have, however, had the opportunity to use this load in a double I had in my possession for a time, and it did well, as it was regulated for the standard 70C-480.
There is one thing I'm going to add here: RL-15, to me is better, if you don't mind using a filler, because it has noticeably less recoil. Maybe not enough to worry about in the .450, but from .500 on up, it's very noticeable. The one reason I use 4831 in the .450, is because I don't have to bother with fumbling around with fillers. Anything bigger, as in .500 to .600, and it's very much worth it, in my opinion.

You are right; I never understood J. Lott, who had a world of experience with double rifles, loading huge cases with fast burning powders and fillers.(same goes for Keith, Seyfried..) It is so simple loading 'normal' nitro cases with slow powders. I load my 450NE with H4831 (slower than its Dupont variant). Start at
93 grains; work up a little to regulate.
