Oval-Bore Rifling
      #75502 - 04/04/07 08:47 AM

I am considering the purchase of a Lancaster with oval-bore rifling and was wondering what to look for to tell if the rifling is in good shape or not. Also what are the general thoughts and experiences with this type of rifling? Good, bad, no difference? Do the barrels wear better of worse than with standard rifling?

Thanks,
Josh Rich

I can't honestly say that I have seen a "shot out" oval bore
as those people who couldn't get them to shoot I figured didn't know how to - after meeting a couple of people who could / did get them to shoot.

However, from what I have seen, in some oval bore barrels you can clearly see the sprial of the oval bore - or the way the light reflects off it - whereas in others, their is still some sprial but not nearly as defined.

Whether this is differences between the makes I am not sure but it may give you some indication.

And in regards to shooting, those people who have worked it out have generally not found a problem.

Hope this helps. If I get a chance I will ask one of the owners how he views the barrels for wear.

I am currently experimenting with a Lancaster .280 Flanged Nitro Express with oval bores. My work has gone really slow and is not complete. I am still looking for that perfect regulation load. However I am experiencing very good barrel groups and expect to have great success in this endeavor.

One thing I have found is that your bullet must closely match your "groove" diameter to get a good grip in the barrel.

Here's my rifle:

Lancaster .280 NE

What caliber are you looking at?

One of the reasons that I was asking was because I had heard that others have had trouble getting them to regulate. I am told that this particular rifle shoots very well with new factory ammo but was still a little curious what others had to say. Rather get everyones opinions before I lay down a bunch of cash, considering that I've never seen an oval bore before.

The caliber is 450 no.2 by the way.

Thanks

As I said, those people who spent the time have got them to shoot well. It seems to be a slightly different method
from normal rifles.

I have never worked with an oval bore double. I can say that the 450 No2 is a GREAT double rifle calibre, one of the best IMHO.

However my 1000 yard Match rifle has a polygon bore. It shoots great and is very easy to clean.

Heckler& Koch made full-auto guns with polygon bores and claimed much longer useful life.

I would test fire the double and see how she shoots.
