Looks like a great spot for it to me, fast and clear.
Nice driven game gun!

If I were shopping for a 9.3x74 I'd jump on it.

Looks to me like it's a bit too far forward. It may be that it'll be fast pick up of the sights but with the shortened sight radius, it'll be harder to shoot for accuracy.

This looks to me like a typical "battue" gun designed for hunting situation where most shots are usually within 50 yards.
You are sitting "ventre au bois" and shooting game such as roe-buck or wild boar when they jump the path in the woods. There is normally much less than a second to acquire the target and kill.
I.e. speed is at a premium compared to accuracy.
This looks like a nice gun!

AS you get older, the forward mounted sight works beter. You can see this on many American FL and percussion rifles where the rear sight was moved forwards and the original sight slot was filled.

vigillinus is correct.

Dan, take a look at most Westley Richards doubles vs most other British doubles. The WR rear sight is much too close to the eye, at least for me.

NE450No2,
Yeah, I agree.
Many of the WR doubles have the rearsight positioned only about 3 inches or so forward of the breechface and that is WAY too far back for me as well.
Dan
I think that sight in the photo is a bit further foward than what is the norm for most doubles, but I wouldn't worry about it in the slightest.

Tony,

I also do not like the far rearward sight placement that WR is known to use.

As for the far forward sight placement of the rifle pictured, I wonder if it gives much advantage compared to ordinary sight placement.

Dan,

How far do you need to hold the morning paper to read it?

I add an inch or so each year and someday my arms are going to be too short. When you get near that stage then the extra two inches or so will make a difference, but not until then.

My Tolley TLH .500/.450 Express was also built for an older shooter.
The rear sight is well forward of the breech.
It's a real honey to shoot though, very quick on moving game.
Loses nothing on paper targets either BTW.

Dunno whether I'd like that tall quarter-rib on the Cabelas offering though, on any rifle!

Marrakai-

Have I noted recently my thoughts that you should ship that rifle to me for it's seasonal 'vacation' out here on the West Coast?

At it's age, we could consider a 'season' to stand for about 25 years...

Sounds like a fair offer, Tinker.
Remember that rifle comes with its own trigger-puller,
and he'll need a pre-paid return air-fare too, along with 25 years worth of food,
board, and elk tags. Quite a cheap deal, really!
