Best Bolt action rifle for the money?

Thank you for your input on best rifles. Now which one gives you the most bang for the buck? I am talking about a dangerous game rifle in 375 HH. Most of the big names do not have web sites.

I think a Winchester 70 would be a great 375 H&H DG rifle.

A CZ would be much cheaper but possibly not as reliable out of the box.

You shouldn't have problems with resale on a Winchester unless the rifle was abused.A pre 64 375 H&H will probably go up in value while you own it!!

If you wish a great deal then look a some of the custom actioned mausers rifles on the Gun Auction sites.Some nice 375's will go for 50 cents on the dollar,but there is a chance you may get a lemon.

The nice think about a 375 is you know the barrel won't be shot out. The usual problem is resale cause not too many average hunters are hot for that caliber gun or headed for Africa.

I'm a Winchester Model 70 fan, but now with their demise, you'll probably be relegated to finding a good used one (they're out there).

That being said, I have purchased a Ruger 77 in 416 Rigby which I'll hopefully be using on a Cape Buffalo in Namibia's Caprivi Region in August of 2008.

I feel both of the rifles listed above fit the bill for providing a lot of bang for the buck.

One additional piece of information from you is necessary to "accurately" answer your question. You started out looking at Dakotas ($5K+)........ realistically what is your budget?

The best 375 H&H for the money is either an original, unaltered pre-64 Model 70, or else an FN Browning. They are out there, all you have to do is look for them.

Also, there are mint-condition, famous-maker custom rifles on the second-hand market that are superb buys compared to having those same, exact rifles built today. For example, a 375 H&H by Al Biesen, Tom Burgess/Earl Milliron, Dale Goens, etc. would make for a truly outstanding hunting rifle..........

The last batch of 375H&H Winchester's I saw here in Aus were crap and had severe feeding problems.
Never known any problems with a CZ.
pre 64 375 H&H which didn't have cross bolts split the stocks
and IMHO, I think they peaked in price a few years back and are hard to sell now.

Just my HO.

No Doubt that there are probably Win 70 lemons out there but my experience has been favorable and I have owned at least 6 Win 70's.I have had 3 Big Bores(2 x 375H&H and a 458WM)and thay have done well.

I must say that when I get a new bolt my "smith" buddie(not a real gunsmith)and I pull the stock and glass and bed the action as well as play with the action/magazine feeding by running rounds thru RAPIDO .No problem with bolt function,action function,or feeding has occured with factory ammo. Maybe I have just been lucky.

All my info on CZ has been secondhand.A friend GD has had real feeding problems with his and dislikes CZ's.I have never owned one personally.I do have a BRNO 602 action in a custom 416 Rigby that feeds and functions great!!

I didn't do anything to my Dakota because it feeds slick as glass, as good or better than any stock Win 70 I have had or have.

I do not have a budget yet. I am trying to make one for a best rifle. Of all the Best rifle makers, who gives you the most gun for the dollar? I like the look of the Dakotas but I have read horror storys of problems with them on this board. I am trying to see what the cost for a true DG gun is and what you are paying for. Do any of the best gun makers have web sites? It seems strange that they would not.

I now have one...the new Ruger Hawkeye 375. It is a LOT of rifle for the money and well thought out. I like it so well that I bought a second, but my elk hunting partner won't give it back after shooting it...he's sending a check, instead.

I haven't had a chance to check out the Hawkeye but I'd put my money on the RSM's and have. They've got all the custom features that are optional elsewhere. Mostly, they're accurate to boot. You can shoot 'em without sending them down to the gunsmith and wait till he finally gets to it. Besides that, the RSM's fit me without having to have the stock whittled down to fit.

I am not a person to have 2 rifles of the same bore size let alone the same caliber. But I am with you on this one. I like what I have heard about the Ruger so much I wouldn't mind getting one to go along with my .375 H&H.

I think Hein would be a top contender if you like synthetic stocks. They also make a very nice wood stocked rifle for the money but it is substantially more then the current factory offerings.

I have 2 BRNO's (CZ) and I have shot a hell of a lot with them and I have never had a problem with either of them. Good value for money I suppose.

I've got a 375 Husky,and I find it very hard to fault.
Iff I found another one I would buy it as well.
Second choice would be a Sako synthetic in 375.
