Hi all,

Not an African hunting question, but I thought this would be the best place to place this question. As many of you guys know I at work in an International Studies department at a university. One of my missions is to look for exchange programs for our students to go to, and also places that will send us students.

I'm currently working on programs in Europe, Asia and also Australia and maybe New Zealand as well.

One place we always have student interest in is Africa. Now as you can imagine we have to send students to a place that is both interesting and beneficial to study at, and also a place that is pretty safe for our students to go to... So this leaves us always wondering about Africa. So I wanted to ask our "old Africa hands" both residents and long-time visitors of Africa about good locations for our students to visit. Naturally I though Cape Town would be an interesting choice: cosmopolitan city, pretty good university, and pretty safe. Though there are good universities in Pretoria and Johannesburg, I've read much about high crime rates in those two cities.

Any further thoughts?

Thanks for helping out someone who is very ignorant of Africa!

Stellenbosch University would have to be in a very safe (and expensive) area. It actually fills a lot of downtown Stellenbosch in the centre of the city.

For tourist visits from my trip there last year, the Wine Regions of Cape Province are pretty safe, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Tulbargh (lots of heritage and old colonial buildings), Frankshoek (splg?) - the location of settlement for a lot of French Hugenots, and Constantia (in Capetown).

Knysna (proonounced "NIsna") is a Port city on the South Coast which was fairly safe. Lots of tourists. We even went on a tour of the township, but it was a tour not self-guided. They even showed us where they had "battles" with the Afrikaaners and drove the white residents out of the township.

I actually tried to get a graduate exchange to South Africa through the AIESEC organisation (Business and economics students) after graduating from University in the 1980's. Got offered something but turned it down. Back then it was of course a big NO NO. I met with previous participants and it sounded like a great experience. Unfortunately it did not work out for me to go to South Africa or elsewhere in Southern Africa.

Contact your country's embassy in the country in which you have a interest. They all have programs.

Thanks all,

We're theoretically open to all fields, but since I work in international studies/politics and my students are either politics, history, military studies, etc. thats where I am most interested: history, political science, military studies, anthropology, etc.

I would think UCT would be a prime choice. Supposed to be a very nice university. Also, like Nitrox mentioned, Stellenbosch is right in wine country and is a very nice college town from what I saw (lots of parties, low crime, etc.)

If I were still a college student those would be my top two in SA.

my daughter went on an international exchange program to RSA last summer. Her school was durban. Originally it was to be one school and shifted to another. I can't remember the name of either, but she was an english major and went to study the zulu language. She had a great time there. Afterwards she and 2 other girls took a trip around SA. Fortunately I had enough contacts that provides them with a he-- of a good time. The only probly she ran into was in capetown. This is rather funny if you can imagine it. It was a sunday and she got approached by a black mugger. Only thig is she is also a black belt in kai se do. so the end result was that she put him into a backwards wristlock, which he was howling in pain over, much to the ammusement of the other black guys around. I can just imagine the sh-- he got from the other guys when a little white girl had him screaming like a stuck pig.
