To coin the phrase - the Big XXX of Australia
      #74424 - 23/03/07 06:11 PM

If you wanted to name the Big Five (or whatever number) for Australia which animals would you choose?

I have my thoughts on the matter. Few are truly dangerous, but their size, and in some cases difficulty to hunt amd even rarity as a hunting beast in the world might get them included.

My thoughts:

1. Water Buffalo;
2. Banteng;
3. Scrub Bull;
4. Camel;
5. Sambar Stag.

What about saltwater crocodile though?

Some of these animals act differently in different areas.
ie Scrub Bull - some are more accustomed to humans than others.

I think you got the list right. Maybe Banteng above Buffalo - scarcity, hard to get to area ?

Saltwater Crocs - IF they were legal, maybe on the difficulty scale but dangerous, only if YOU go into there territory / living space.

You know my answer to that line Nitro!

Hard to get to area? with modern transport hmmm!

Hard to get to area i reckon is walking 20 miles into a "closed area" chasing sambar stags!

Many places in Vic`s high country dont even have chopper access.

From a game animal and trophy point of view, I would leave the camel out, and replace it with a wild boar!

1.Sambar stag
2. Banteng
3.scrub bull
4. water buff
5. wild boar.

Remember, my point of view is about a respectable trophy of each species, and although the wild boar is nowhere near as big as a camel, it can be dangerous (although rarely is here in Australia)and it has trophy tusks. What trophy features does a camel have? Its hump?
I know there is many other deer trophy's that could also get a mention, but i believe these can be easier to hunt (during the rut ect,) than a trophy wild boar. salt water croc is not realy in the legal game status to realy be considered IMO.

Just my opinion.

Quite true, dbb, I too would rate boar well above camel. You will probably get a difference of opinion from those who hunt pigs in the southern half of Australia, where big loner boars are rare. The average solitary boar is 100 kg where I hunt, many are bigger. On foot, up close, they are certainly worthy of inclusion in the Ozzie top five.

Crocs would get a mention only if general 'dangerousness' is a consideration, but they are not really dangerous to hunt/shoot IMHO.

Difficult to hunt was coined for hunting animals as sambar are ...of the animals listed here the most difficult to hunt and obtain is the sambar stag.You can buy a guided hunt for any animal as long as you have top dollar even sambar you can buy a hunt for but no guide will guarantee you a trophy sambar unless its WV or MR etc diff with the rest,pay the bucks and its yours.

You can take a chopper into a/land far more readily than you can into areas of Vics high country as noted.

Take Duggaboybuff hes hunted the lot and basically he will tell whats the toughest to get a decent trophy of...very simple to work out whats what when the top animal as the sambar is so far ahead of the others in "difficulty to hunt" conditions that it renders the others into a different class.

Any of the good sambar men could readily take any of the others ..not so with the other way round.

After reading the above comments I will have to admit that the hardest I ever worked for an animal was a sambar in the back of Licola.
Now before anybody starts jumping up and down about hunting in the High Country,it is bloody hard work and any form of access by land or air is very limited...another words you walk in with all you require on your back.
How do I know this :-"I was born at Dargo 59 years ago and still get up there as often as possible."

The reason I would not personally include Wild Boar is that they are about the most common of game species right around the world.

If you include the African species ie warthog and bushhog, they exist virtually everywhere except for the Far North or Antartic. Inadditon most Aussie "boars" are not true wild boars by any sense. How would the most "wild" razorback compare to a huge Russian Wild Boar? European wild boar show their true genes so much more clearly than any Aussie feral pig I have seen (personally or in photos). No comparisons.

Boar while great to hunt are also not a great challenge. Boar if some sort of rating of danger was apportioned though would be far more dangerous than sambar or camels both of which would be virtually nil. Except if environmental factors were included such as desert hunting or mountain hunting.

Just some comments for the discussion.

***

Wild Camels I believe are unique to Australia.

Camels also look "big".

So who here has a camel "trophy"? What do you take as a camel "trophy"? Skin? Shoulder mount? Photos? Full mount?

***

Yes Gryphon, that is why I included the sambar. As everyone has!

It doesn't improve their standing to knock all the other species whenever the chance arises. If a species can't stand on its own four feet without negativity then something somewhere is a problem! As I asked for "Big Five" (or "Six") I don't understand the negativity.

Borish! (ie a pun on the above paragraphs)

Just some thoughts.

Somehow rolling a camel dosent grab me as anything to have mounted for the wall...maybe a photo would suffice but even that i doubt would be enlarged and framed. (for me)

Shooting a camel isnt as easy as some may think especially iff they have been hunted before.
Iff they see you or get a wiff of your scent ,they can put a great deal of distance between you and them in a very short space of time.
Having said that they are easy to put down with a 30 plus calibre rifle.
I have used the meat and grissely hump for wild dog baits on numerous occations.
In fact camel meat and hump is recomended as the best meat to use for wild dog baiting .
