Has anyone hunted the Chewore Escarpment near Manna Pools Park in Zim? I am going in June with Lowveld Safaris for Elephant, Lion, and Buff and looking for your hard earned advice.

Sounds like you have a wonderful safari planned. How many days are you booked for? Double it!

Which side of the escarpment? I have hunted the Chewore side, but in September. Lots of mountains, physically demanding, beautiful scenery. We hunted along the Mana Pools border for quite a few days. It is cold up on the mountains, so bring some clothes to keep warm. Cold on top in Sptember but 95*+ on the valley floor.

While I had time to hunt in September and October, and knew going in that that wasn't prime time, I had a great hunt. I was told that June was prime time in that area. I was also told that there was a chance of an incredible elephant, especially in the early season, that might be lured to the fields by the rippening crops.

BTW, the largest elephant we saw would have gone five + feet of ivory, but it was white and thin and he was too young. That bull in ten years would be phenominal.

I have hunted both Chewore North and South Safari areas but as far as i know the Lowveld guys hunt the communal lands to the south of Chewore and Mana Pools around the Mukwishi River.
As the this area has crops up to about May,it should be inviting for the big bulls of the park.
I have been told buy a PH that this area is not bad for hunting in general.

Lowveld hunts some communal areas but they also have what they call the Chewore Escarpment which is a narrow strip of land between the communnal area and Manna Pools Park. Their PH told me to be sure to get there for June 1st so thats when I will arrive. I checked out some Hunting Reports that were filed on them which looked good but they were several years old.

I spent 3 weeks in Chewore with Hunters Safaris back in May '94. Don't know how it is now, but back then it was full of very fine animals. Pity you don't have more time, it was 17 days of hard hunting to find the elephant I took.
I hope you're in shape. It is pretty rugged terrain, and when tracking jumbo, you can put 30 Ks a day on your boot leather.

Have fun and good luck!

I wish I had more time also, but with work, wife, and kids I am lucky to get what I got. I am going to start walking and biking to get in shape. I am really looking for a decent lion first, a nice Buff second, and I am only going to spend the big money for an elephant if I come across a 50lb+ tusker.
