Mauser broomhandle
      #74220 - 21/03/07 04:35 AM

Ever since I can remember I have always been fascinated by this weapon(I don't know why).Unfortunately inspite of a lot of effort I could not purchase one as there are very few around here.Yesterday on a visit to my local gunsmith I was surprised to see one and more so when I was told that it was for sale. Its in good condition with wooden holster and full auto. The asking price is USD1000(equivalent) but maybe I could bring it down to 900.I know im going to buy it but just want to know if the price is reasonable.

Yes,
the price is very reasonable.
Value depends a lot condition, model and calibre.

I would go down and buy it straight away
- while you are haggling over $100, someone
will come in and just pay the $1000 and
then your back where you started which is
"Unfortunately inspite of a lot of effort
I could not purchase one as there are
very few around here."

Do you mean it's a machine pistol? Awesome! Grab it quick!

Sadly, we can't get the full auto versions in Australia without catastrophic de-activation.
The semi-auto patterns are still fun, though. You may remember my example is a 7.63 Bolo from the 1920s.

Is that one 9mm or 7.63 Mauser?

If its full auto I take it its one of the 'Schnell-Feuer' or "quick firer" with the removable magazine clip (10 or 20 rounds) if its a full auto one?

I'm not sure on how Pakistani prices match up with American ones, but those are quite valuable here... Especially if its original and not a "parts shooter".

As a kid those M-96s were my favorite handguns. When I turned 21 and could buy a pistol, I got a parts one and well I was rather dissapointed... My fault for getting a parts one though... Then I saw the light and got a mint condition Webley Mark IV, simply the best combat revolver ever made! Put that old mauser to shame...

Saw one yesterday that was owned by a gun dealer. he wanted 10 grand US for it.

So 950 cant be bad.

iqbal

"Its still with the gunsmith for polishin"

what are you polishing it for ?

If you or the gunsmith just want to make it look
clean and tidy, I wouldn't. Unless it is rusty,
I would Leave the "aged patina" on it otherwise
it loses alot of it value.

US$10,000 - saw one go for Aus$17,000,
about US$13,600 at todays exchange rate
but it was more like US$16,000 when it was sold.

Seeing the prices mentioned it seems i've had a real good deal.By polishing I meant general cleaning, oiling etc.mostly of the wooden holster.I will make sure that the aged patina is left intact.Should I have the holster polished or leave it as it is?Its not in very good shape i.e. scratches etc. Thanks for the advice.

I'll leave it to an expert re the holster
but any leather gun items I have I put on leather dressing
over a period of time and it gradually softens and moisturises
the leather. Then if you rub it lightly with a good cloth
it will get some shine back to it anyway.

Whatever you use (leather dressing), try it over a period of
a week on a small, out of the way area first just to make sure.

Hi Iqbal,

congratulations for your buy!

A word of caution:
A gunsmith told me some years ago that the old 9mm Parabellum (= 9mm Luger) guns as Luger 08 or Mauser C96, etc. should not be shot with the current manufactured 9mm ammunition, because this is normally loaded to higher pressures.

In fact, Lapua offered ammunition especially for these old guns with a reduced velocity of ca. 320 m/s for a 115grs FMJ bullet.(As I write this, I have one box of this ammunition before me.
There is a stamp on the flap, saying "V(elocity) at 25m = 300 m/s" for a 115grs bullet).
I shot a Luger 08 from 1936 with this ammunition and the gun functioned flawlessly!

I would suggest to reload some ammo in accordance of the the starting loads in the manuals, and only if these won´t function, increase the charge.

It takes a little more effort, but I think such a gun deserves it!

best wishes
Rolf

Thanks for the advice Rolf.Right now I have no intentions of firing it but will do so under advice of my gunsmith and info.provided by you.Fact is I bought this weapon as a collectors item to admire and cherish not to use,I may however occasionally fire it to keep it in form.

I do admire your restraint, but the firearm aficionado hasn't yet been born that can own a C-96 Mauser and not fire it! Frequently!

You're in denial, my friend!

Marrakai,I have fired it and it was like a dream come true.Every once in a while, though not often ,I take it to my farm and let off a few rounds and then spend a lot of time on cleaning it and admiring it.I don't know what it is with this weapon but i just adore it.
