Safari hunting camels

By Kate Sieper

Wednesday, 14/03/2007

Safari hunting in the Top End plays an important role in reducing feral horse donkey, pig and buffalo numbers. Tens of thousands of animals are killed by every year, and pastoralists even get a fee to let the hunters onto their country to kill the unwanted animals.

So could the same be done for camels in the Centre?

Matt Graham is the managing director of Hunt Australia and he says there is a lot of interest in camel culling, and if the logistics of hunting in such harsh and remote terrain could be resolved then he thinks the camel problem of the Centre could be over.

"The camel is something completely foreign to them, it's foreign to most hunters around the world. I think it would be something extremely interesting to them. They're found in a completely remote area, they're a very large animals as well, so you know it would be quite different for them.

"They're quite difficult to approach too, that's the thing. A wild camel is a wild camel, he's used to living in the open plains, so to actually get up close to them to shoot one is quite hard. I would only have to start sending some emails, and we would have hundreds of hunters here in a few months. I've got enquiries there already."

Well done to Matt.

Australia is about the only place in the world where camels roam in the wild. In most parts of the world they are strictly livestock. In fact wild camels, caught and domesticated have been exported back to Arabia. Fancy that!
