Kuduland Safaris Tanzania Buff hunt
      #72882 - 02/03/07 05:46 AM

Hi,

Has anyone used Kuduland Safaris as an outfitter? How do they rate as far as price/per performance?

I am looking at a 7 day buff hunt in Tanzania in 2008 and really want to know what the real cost are for something like this. They quote a price of $11500.00 2x1 + exclusive expenses I guess at around $3000.00 to $4000.00.

Do this sound about right?

Thanks,
BlainSmipy

I am no specialist but the pricing is excellent considering hunting in the famous Tanzania.
What do You include in exclusive expenses, beside airflights.
Is it only booze?..............and tarts???????
Seriously Kuduland safaris is a renowned outfit. In my opinion this is an interesting offer.

Well, near as I can figure:

About $500.00 in government tax.
$2600.00 in airfair, they include the charter flight in the $11500.00.
Another $300.00 in hotel, $200 in food in travel.
$200.00 in tips.
$500.00 in trophy shipping and prep.

So I figure about $4500.00 additional. This is a guess on everything but the air fair. I have not received an exact quote on the the other cost; no one wants to give and/or knows this cost.

So total I'm guessing at around 11500+5000(round up) $16500.00

Shingani Safaris in RSA quoted me a show price of $14000.00 total for a 7 day buff hunt, excluding airfair and trophy shipping and prep. So the price works out to be about the same.

Since the price is the same, which country would you hunt? Shingani practically promises 42" and bigger dugaboys. What I don't like about hunting RSA is the that fact your on a ranch, with fences. Not very sporting IMHO.

Bwana,

We recently replied to a hunt enquiry similar to your query and I'll use that to clarify the EXACT costs. My additional comments are in CAPITALS - (I couldn't make the font colour change!)

The 2x1 hunt price of US$11550 per hunter includes the first buffalo trophy fee and charter costs, as well as all Government taxes. So the only extra expenses regarding the actual hunt will be for additional trophy fees on
animals you take from the 7 day licence (2nd buffalo + plains game), firearm permit at US$200/firearm and tips.

Other expenses to budget for would be your international air travel, THESE ARE VARIABLE, BUT TRY KATHY KLIMES OR GRACY TRAVEL. Tanzania visa, I BELIEVE THIS IS US$50 PP FROM THE USA, airport tax (US$20pp), USUALLY INCLUDED IN YOUR TICKET PRICE, ammo tax (approx US$30/100 rounds), NOT ALWAYS PAYABLE, IT SEEMS TO DEPEND ON INDIVIDUAL CUSTOMS OFFICER, insurance, hotel accommodation in Dar before hunt and possibly after, depending on your airline schedule (approx US$150/per room/night inc. breakfast) other meals and drinks are not included, medical vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis, YOUR DOMESTIC HEALTH INSURANCE MIGHT WELL PROVIDE THIS FREE OF CHARGE, trophy shipping etc, WE INCLUDE DIP AND PACK AND TRANSFER OF TROPHIES TO DAR ES SALAAM IN THE PACKAGE PRICE, INTERNATIONAL FREIGHT SHIPPING IS AT YOUR COST. Taxidermy set-up - and any additional safari activities/tours. THESE ARE IF YOU WANT TO GO ON A PHOTO TOUR OF SERENGETI ETC.

TRANSFERS BETWEEN AIRPORT - HOTEL- AIRPORT ARE US$10 PP EACH WAY AND THE HOTEL ADD THIS TO YOUR BILL.

IN OTHER WORDS, AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, WE'VE QUOTED YOU AN 'ALL IN' PRICE THAT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO HIDDEN COSTS WHATSOEVER. - YOU'LL BE HUNTING THE SELOUS RESERVE WHICH IS A TOTALLY UNFENCED TRUE WILDERNESS AREA - IN FACT, THE LARGEST ONE IN THE WORLD.

hOPE YOU DON'T MIND ME POINTING OUT THAT I NOTICED YOU'D ALLOWED US$200 FOR TIPS. - TIPS ARE ALWAYS AT THE CLIENT'S DISCRETION, BUT I'D SUGGEST YOU HAVE UNDERESTIMATED THESE FOR THE HUNT ITSELF. PERHAPS OTHER FORUM MEMBERS MIGHT LIKE TO SUGGEST WHAT IS MORE CUSTOMARY.

I APOLOGISE FOR CAPITALS WHICH IS USUALLY CONSIDERED ILL MANNERED ON INTERNET FORUMS. - I TRIED TO PUT MY COMMENTS IN LOWER CASE RED, BUT COULDN'T MAKE IT WORK....

I think it sounds like a good deal.Just as or more important would be your relationship with the PH on such a DG hunt.

You may wish to ask the average size and success rate of attempts at previous Buff taken and the stability and history/ownership of the hunting concession to be utilized.

Do you not also have the option of another Buff as well for an additional trophy fee? That's great!

I do believe and agree that tipping is far more substantial than you allowed though--

Referring to Larcher's post. All booze is included but the only tarts we can help you with are the ones that come out of the chef's oven!

Blain,
I believe Steve's post clarify's most everything. And, I'd suggest you re-evaluate thae amount you budget for a gratuity. In Tanzania, you will be tipping the PH, the trackers, the driver, the skinners, and about 5-8 others who do the wash, attend your tent, heat your shower water, night security, do the laundry etc. I think you should be thinking $1,500 as a begining minimum.

I want to point out, that I have NEVER been on safari, and half the outfits I've talked to give
elusive, vague answers to questions regarding actual total cost. As far as tipping, I'm glad people have answered that question for me. As I said, I have NEVER been on safari, so how would I know this? I'm not trying to be cheap, I really just don't know.

With that being said, I'll leave poor Steve alone, I think I've wrung him dry on cost and info and have enough data on his operation to draw my conclusions.

Honestly, what I and my brother are looking for is the true African Safari experience. I want to hunt hard in a location that is as close to what the early hunters experienced as possible; primitive conditions, animals wondering through camp, real adventure. Thus far Tanzania seems to fit the bill at a price I can afford.

Blain,

No problwm Bwana - ask as many questions as you like. As it says on my website we appreciate an African safari is a big investment for anyone....... we actually expect a lot of questions and are always happy to answer them....... We make a point of not having any hidden costs whatsoever and from your comments above, we can give you everything you want and more. The Selous is as wild and as unspoilt as it gets. - If you like to hunt hard, then I'm your man - because so do I....... so it sounds like we're gonna have a lot of fun!

Regarding tips etc, we'll send both of you a copy each of our 'Handy Little Hunting Book' when you book with us as part of the safari pack. Tips and a multitude of other subjects are discussed there. So you have no need to worry.

Blain,

I think you will be very happy with Steve and Kuduland. While I have not been hunting with him I have corresponded with him about a few different subjects and he is very knowledgeable. A stand up guy with a good reputation. I think the price he quoted is very competitive. Good Luck on your first Safari.... It will not be your last!
