Mauser 98 9.3x62mm Steigleder
      #72863 - 01/03/07 06:31 PM

Hey Guys

I recently came across a gun in a blokes collection that I dont think I should pass up.

This is what it is - Original Mauser 98 9.3mmm x 62 customized by Ernst Steigleder - Suhl and Berlin (manufacturer from 1921-35)

Barrel appears to be 24inch, starts octagonal near the action then smooths to regular shape, ribbing runs the full length of the barrel

Action is rounded, untapped and is decorated with engraving, as is the barrel and trigger guard

Bore is in excellent condition, bolt is smooth and bolt face unmarked

Stock has very thin fitted butt plate with another under the grip

stock has good checkering with just a couple of minor dings (should be removable) Wood variety unknown but is pale, possible Teak ??

Front sights has 2 V sights, one of them hinged to fold flat ( are they 100 and 200m ?? )

I have been trying to do researh on Ernst's rifles but there appears to be bugger all of his guns out there apart from his 16g 9.3/74 combo

Is this gun too collectable ? Because I'm planning to shoot loads of Pigs, red deer, donkey, horses, camels, Buffalo and Scrub bulls.

Thanks

The name sounds familiar to me but I can't place it. Sounds like a neat rifle. Is the bolt knob round or pear shaped? What's the floor plate like? Hinged? Lever? Locking screw on the forward bolt? The wood is probably walnut. The early German makers used plain walnut on standard guns and didn't color it when finishing so it comes out more orange. Its probably strong with good grain flow, though. What type of stock does it have? Slim, little German carbine style (a B Model Mauser) or more English/American (A Model Mauser). Pics?

Thanks for reply

I've gone ahead and bought the mauser, still trying to work out how to place photo online

Bolt is rounded, floor plate is fixed, stock is thick fairly straight and European in style

Ernst Steigleder appears to have made this firearm around 1923-24 and the only other rifle I could find listed any where in the world is at a website Oldhuntingguns.com check out lot No 141
although the calibre is 7 x 57 the engraving on my gun is more intricate with better lines, action my gun is also completely rounded, barrel is exactly the same. Any hints on how to post photo's

thanks

Hi Pablo Mauser 66,

There is an article of an THE GERMAN GUN COLLECTORS magazine that list the following:
Ernst Steigleder Gewehrfabik Neiderlassung Suhl

You should be pleased, a super nice rifle and a perfect caliber.

Very fine rifle!

I wish there were some current factory rifles like that.

Thanks Dale for the help in posting the photo

Gun was found in a sydney gun shop, had only been cataloged as part of a gun collection recently recieved. I guess this was a bit of a lucky find as i had only been looking for a 9.3 x 62 for about 6 months. In australia Sako's are $2200, Bruno's $ 1500 and Tikka's $850. Gunsmith suggested that the stock wasn't original but still a lovely piece of walnut around 50 years old. I dont plan on modifying the rifle in any way. I paid $1200 Aussie for the gun after almost swallowing my tongue when I first spotted a very old price tag of $2250. Any I must now wait around a month to pick up the gun (28day cooling period in Australia, I will post some better outdoor photo then

CHEERS Pablo

Nice rifle you have! I know a good bit about the prewar German guns and the retailer was right, this is not the original stock.(type of wood, finish, styling while well imitated not prewar German)I am also suprised to see a single trigger, probably changed from a double set too. I also believe the bolt handle was changed, alot of these had a spoon or butterknife style handle but some did have round knob just not with the rearward bend in it. Great rifle anyways, how does it shoot? What is the recoil like on the 9.3x62?? Kevin.

Pablo

good pick up, well done.

I was going to ask if you thought it was a restock but I see you made a comment on it. Anyway, it's been nicely done.

I agree re the bolt handle has been possibly changed.

Anyway, well done, you should have fun with it.

The stock does look like a Geoff Slee 'Classic' style replacement stock. Non original furniture I'd say.

Is the bolt and cocking piece polished or the blueing worn off ? I can't tell.

Heers68 I reckon trigger probably original, its bloody heavy and the pins that hold it are riveted over, like its never been altered. Bolt also appears original although not to say it wasn't bent back at when it was restocked.

Thophet1, bolt and C/piece are polished. Barrel doesn't seem to like woodleigh PP or round nose very much with groups around 2 inch plus. I used 293gr TUG's last year on Donkeys/Horses and would say they were a little too effective on the penetration side. Thou I used em in case of an opprtunity on a bovine. 5 shot group was just under 4 inches at 200m which is about max range I feel

Recoil is a nice push, I comfortably fired 30+ shot in a day with no ill effect. I love a 26 inch barrel. I will be heading back to NT in September to knock a few ferals over.

Also getting a pair of 404's built at the moment, one will have a 26 inch barrel and be scoped the other might even get a Stainless 24inch barrel !!!

Pablo
