Rebore and rifle a double
      #72788 - 01/03/07 03:50 AM

Does anyone know of a person in the USA that will properly rebore and rifle a double rifle.

I have had some real horrible jobs done on some single barrel rifles, and don't want to get #@*&^$ again.

I want to send it directly to the person, and not go through a middle man, as I want to talk to them and make sure they know what is to be done.

Let me know what you come up with.

Mark

Try:
Clearwater Reboring
Delta Gun Shop
989 Bear Creek Road
Covlille, WA 99114
(509)684-5855
http://www.deltagunshop.com
e-mail jim@deltagunshop.com

The reboring end is Cliff LaBounty's old reboring shop, under new management w/lot's of expensive new tooling. Jim and Allen have rebored and rechambered 3 Browning rifles (2 HighWall SS and an 1895 lever) for me, and rebarrelled and rechambered another (HighWall again) while they were out there. They are equipped to rebore and rechamber double rifles also and while I have no personal experience with their DR work, I'm extremely happy with the work they've done for me.

The shop that had been owned by now deceased FRED WELLS, has

an excellent re- borer. BUT, I called there a minute ago and

asked about DOUBLE RIFLE reboring and they referred me to the

shop sited above. Further, the shop that I called [ www.cutrifle.com ]

stated that the above shop is the only one in the U.S. that does the

DOUBLE RIFLE reboring. And, work from Europe and England is being

sent to them!

Jack,

I'm not sure if you want to see this or not, but on my website I have a photo of my 577 Boss double. Lever over guard. Not for sale, as I collect Boss guns and rifles.

Are you looking for nitro or BPE? I can look around for you.

I also have other photos of rifles of mine. Check out

www.thesecondshot.com

go to photo page, at the bottom are some of my rifles.

And yes I know, the web site is in dire need of updating!

I've been doing rebores with Jim since he bought the biz from Cliff LaBounty. His work is wonderful, and he is an honorable guy...don't have to worry at all about sending Jim a pricey rifle.

To OTTO & all,

What is the minimum diameter of the exterior of

the bbl at the muzzle as compared to the bore size? IE. to

fire a .375 bullet, what is the minimum diameter of the bbl

at the muzzle, .625 inch, a quarter of an inch larger than

the bullet? Would this be a constant? With a 600NE using a

.620 inch bullet is the exterior bbl diameter at the muzzle

.870 inch? I guess what I'm asking is HOW THICK do double

rifle bbl WALLS have to be, AND is this a constant figure or

must the walls get thicker with caliber? I ask this espe-

cially with reference to vintage U.K. built rifles with 50

to 110 year old steel bbls.

Wall thickness is a requirement of Pressure, not caliber. The higher the pressure, the greater the barrel wall required. Your math was off by a factor of two. .870-.620=.250 .250/2= .125 I have a refference chart for recomended minimums at my shop. I can post on that later if someone does not beat me too it.

The muzzle wall thickness can safely get smaller as the bore-size increases. The reason is that pressure is usually lower for the larger cartridges. The logical end-point is the shotgun.

BFJ: the thicknesses you quote would probably result in a very barrel-heavy double. Muzzles need to be quite trim to place the bulk of the rifle's weight back between the hands, and get the balance-point somewhere near the hinge-pin. Each barrel is stiffened by both the ribs and the second barrel, therefore they do not need to be thick-walled to prevent 'whip' or 'flip', or whatever you want to call barrel-flex during firing.

Judging by the PMs I get from potential home DG-builders, few American bolt-rifle smiths 'get' this, although it seems to be common knowledge amongst most Brit and a good many European gunsmiths.

Slim those muzzles right down, and you will get a lively, quick-handling double: the Holy Grail!

I just want all to know that the numbers I used were in

the form of a QUESTION! I am not at all insisting they are

correct. I am sorry if I sounded like I was making statements.
