I buy all Wally Winfer's books as they hit the market.
They get 5 stars from me.

You might find one of Jon Kirton's books floating around, and they are highly recommended too. Wally's fine efforts incorporate a fair bit of Kirton's research anyway, but there was too much good stuff to duplicate!

I'll second Marrakai's suggestion. The Winfer books are more specific to a particular design.
The Kirton book is an excellent overview of all British Falling block breech loaders.

I got my copies from Buffalo Arms.

DoubleD I'm looking for something with a lot of good pics and a lot of info in it.No rifle in general I like looking at #1s all the way up to the most pricey one you can find. The only Winfer book I can find is only on H&H single shots. The book is Vol.5 for $60 used.I would like to find one with all different kinds and in a newer book some of the ones I found are really old.Dave

Go to www.abebooks.com and search for Wal Winfer.

I got 23 hits.

Winfer books focus on the British Single shot. One Seller is offering all five the currently available volumes.

While you are there you can also use the advanced search function and query "single shot rifles" in quotes and as three words. I got 126 hits there. A lot of De Haas and Grant.

Jon Kirton got me two hits.

You can also search for specific rifles in the keyword search.

"Custom Rifles In Black and White" by Steven Dodd Hughes. There are some bolt guns in it, but enough S/S rifles to make it more than worthwhile. Read it at arms length so you don't drool on it. Regards.

The bedrock set for vintage American single shots is the "Single Shot Rifle" series by Grant. Long out of print but still to be found, the six volumes (and the one entitled "Boys Single Shots" contains a lot more than that) have detailed descriptions and photos of many one-of-a-kind variations on Sharps, Remington, Bullard, Ballard, Peabody, etc. Dave

It is of more specific interest to collectors and for single shot history, but I can recommend "The Classic British Rook and Rabbit Rifle" by Colin Greenwood

Otherwise, the Winfer books are great too. Have ordered Kirton, but can't comment yet
