Some pics of a safari in Burkina Faso
      #72364 - 23/02/07 09:36 PM

I have safaried, with my cousin Luc, in Burkina in 2003 and 2004 at Yentangou camp, the outfit of the famous Toufic.
My cousin Luc was there with Claude in 2006 also

As I promised here are some pictures taken by my friends Claude and Paul in Burkina Faso on the Namoungou area run by the famous Toufic.

Some upland shooting in the morning, Jean-Pierre and his wife Brigitte, Claude and the pointer Tango. The bag : francolins and red pigeons

A fine roan, a solitary which was following a herd of 40.
Note the poor quality of the pics, the photographer ignores that taking a pic close to the ground provides a better result.
A roan (koba in Burkinabe) is a biq as a horse. The French name is Horse antelope. The only bigger antelope is the eland.
The hunting team : the PH, the Ranger, the Water bearer and the driver

A coveted Buffon antelope : there are few in this area and Toufic is slightly avaricious Buffonwise. It’s a grand gift, being offered to shoot one.

A reedbuck, not the Bohor variety, that Claude was dreaming of getting.

A redbuff, medium size. The pic could be better

I am cooking their report, they have many anecdotes. But they lack some humour, they are Lutherians like Nitrox and ErikD

Larcher,
Must have been a fantastic safari, I can't wait to read the report. Is the Hippotrague an old bull, or?

Cheers
Johan

Thanks

I have to convice my friends to write as fast as possible their report.
In fact, I think there will be 2 reports.
1) the report of this hunt
2) a digest of hunting this outfit 4 times 2times by myself, 3 times by luc and 2 times by claude. All these hunts agregated with considerations for the country, the people, the politics, and many pics and anecdotes that Toufic may divulge. A pity some cannot be aired because of politically embarassing.

The Roan, Hippotrague rouan is the french name , on the picture is an old male : OF COURSE. In Burkina one may shoot only full grown male, preferably past breeding. The PH know the threshold of horns' size for every shootable antelopes and penalities ares stiff and applied.
This male was loosely following a mixed herd of about 40 beasts. With these old solitary males one is sure to shoot an allowed game. The females too bear horns but are never solitary. These solitaries often have slightly worn horns.
On this territory roan are favourite lion snack. More than buff.

I'm beginning to get scared myself! Especially since I'm about as religious as a block of wood, and only go to church for weddings and funerals!

Thanks for sharing Claudes pictures with us! I look forward to reading more of what he has to say about the hunt, and the other reports you mentioned.

I might add that Burkina Faso, and west Africa in general, is highly underrated by many hunters with an interest for Africa. I personally feel that west Africa feels a bit more "genuine", or perhaps closer to what Africa was like in the old days as it in some regards is less devoloped. In a good way. People seems to be more open, friendly and colourful than what is often found in east/southern Africa IMO.

Also, FWIW, some of the best pizza in Africa can be had in Ouagadougou, and the local street food is generally tasty, safe to eat, and cheap!

Erik

Please excuse me for making a generalization here, but from what I've observed over the years, it seems to me that many French hunters seem to visit more exotic hunting destinations than those of us here in the states. Anyone else noticed that?

Excellent trophies, especially the roan! I think hunting in western Africa would be a super adventure and I have had my eye on Benin and Burkina Faso for some time... however, few American booking agents handle hunts in this area of Africa and have little experience there. When I do find hunts offered in this region, they are often more expensive for Americans than Europeans... even taking the currency exchange into consideration. I will get there one day though...

Thanks for the photo's JB, I guess the reason for you not joining them was the bug. Have you rid yourself of it yet.

That roan is a beauty.
