The African Buffalo is on the red list ?
      #72318 - 23/02/07 08:54 AM

I just read what is written on the subject of "buffalo" in Wikipedia ( Germany )and first got upset to read that excessive hunting was responsible for the decline of the species. Not a single word of the rinderpest or destruction of habitat.
At the end of the article there is a link to IUCN with the comment that the African Buffalo syncerus caffer is on the red list of endangered species!
I am a dedicated buffalo hunter and to me this reads like a very bad joke.

Wicked good hunting !!!

Maybe they meant there is a red subspecies?

Are you sure that it's not a "GREEN" statistic? They always seem to skew the statistics all out of proportion to the facts.

From the english verison: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Buffalo

Quote:

Although in the past the population of African buffalo was in the tens of millions, it now stands at about 900,000; mostly in the savannas of eastern Africa. Some of the reasons for this decline in numbers are hunting, both for food and for sport; the conversion of their habitat to farmland and cattle pasture; droughts; and the introduction of foreign pests and diseases, especially the cattle disease rinderpest. It is not considered to be in danger of extinction as long as it remains protected in parks and reserves, although habitat loss continues (Huffman 2006)(IUCN 2006).

I'd say Wikipedia is stretching the truth a bit here, but I am not suprised. Also, notice that the list of countries where buffalo are found is not complete. Nor do they mention the western buffalo or the dwarf forest buffalo.

FWIW, I have a general impression that a lot of info found on Wikipedia has a greenie slant to it...

Erik

IMHO number of buffalo in South Africa are climbing. More and more breeding centres are established for "clean" (TB Free)buffalo to ensure the survival of these species.

good move Kalenga

In French, Wikipedia has almost nothing. Most of all concerned the asian Buff (Bubalis). They list the red buff and the dwarf buff in Africa, also
They are honest, they complain not having data and ask for some. I think I'll do my best to supply intelligent, real and accurate data. For once a hunter can provide the facts instead of trying to modify false ones...in vain.

Isn't Wikipedia made up of contributions from anyone on the net who contributes, but is edited or approved somewhat?

So:

1. How reliable is it?

2. The "facts" will be biased by the contributor.

The above is a classic example.

John
I imagine there is sort of a comitee testing your contribution before it be published.
Later, should your contribution be biased or inexact, I think many readers will protest, leading to a correction of the erronous facts?
