A cartridgebelt ? Are You a masochist?
      #71795 - 18/02/07 02:14 AM

Even when upland hunting I am reluctant with using a cartridge belt.

In Africa, when the mercury hit 100°F (40°C) and the sun hit like a golden Cassius Clay, how do You feel when sweating like a pig especially around the waist because of a heavy, stiff and cumbersome cartridge belt. What good does it You after walking 5 hours?
My choice : a pouch.

Larcher,

It depends on what I am doing.

Like you, I prefer a pouch (or 2) as this can stay on me all the time, even when I take my shirt off. IF vehicle based, it also allows me to carry to different calibres so I can grab whichever gun is more suitable for what comes up.

I do use leather belts, however they get wrecked from the sweat / salt and I have to spend a month washing, drying and re applying heaps of leather dressing to get it back to some sort of suppleness.

It didn't help on one belt where the leather just cracked and stayed reasonably hard.

For Africa I like the cartridge belt. 2" except where the loops are where it is about 4". No problems in the heat, easy to take the whole thing off when its time for the truck or lunch or whatever, equally easy back on. Mine has never become stiff or cracked and is just wearing in nicely after about fifty days of hunting with it. I have a seperate two round slide that fits on the belt to carry two softpoints on the opposite side of the belt from the loops and seperated by a small multi tool. I once unloaded from a walk for elephants and found a soft in one of my chambers so no softs in the loops anymore.

I keep my big bore ammo in the belt but my 375H&H ammo in two five round pouches; each tracker carries a pouch in case I should need ammo beyond what is in the magazine. If I were forced to carry the 375 for DG then I would carry the ammo too.

At home I like ten round pouches for rifles and a six round slide for shotgun slugs. The carriers go on a belt that also carries a knife and small diamond hone, a multi tool and a range finder. I can switch out the ammo carriers while keeping the rest of the gear on the belt.

Larcher

What good does it You after walking 5 hours?

For weight loss around the middle?

The canvas belts are lighter, flexible and a whole lot cooler. I even use a canvas sling on my double. Now, they are not as nice looking as leather, but in 100 degree whether looks are not a priority.

I use both. In Africa where less shots are fired usually one or two pouches with flaps.

At home here if needed I have a couple culling belts, holding twenty rounds. They do get heavy!

Hi larcher
In Africa I use my canvas culling belt holding 18 rounds of .416 Rigby without any problems. Except that I was running out of ammo on my last buffalo hunt. If there is a next time I will give the tracker a MTM box with another 10 rounds to carry !

It doesn't matter if you prefer pouch or belt allways make sure that you've got plenty of extra ammo in your pocket! That could be my motto.

I really like the Uncle Mikes nylon belts with the elastic loops. They are cheap, comfortable and easy to switch. I have one for each rifle so If I am carrying my 500 I just grab the belt with the 500 ammo. Works very will for me.

On my 3 Safaris to Zimbabwe I used a 15 round leather belt by Murray Leather for each of my doubles. Worked perfect.

Larcher:
I am more of a shotgunner and I use the right pocket of my shooting vest or jacket so I cant comment on the use of a cartridge belt as I havent used one.

what I can comment on however is that simile you used ..."and the sun hit like a golden Cassius Clay"
very cool turn of phrase!!!

I must admit,,,, I'll be borrowing that one !

Yeah, I see that everybody has his own requirement and opinion. Everything is worth being respected

I (stubbornly) stick with my pouch, less hindrance and dryer loins.

A drawback of the pouch is the balance : as I am over 50 I have to be careful. If my belt (thin canevas army belt)is not well balanced my hauches will cry within 2-3 hours. On my belt I am wearing a camera on the right, a video cam on the left and my ammo pouch centered on my back. If there is more weight on one side, sure a hauch will protest.
I must add that I am using a 375 rifle fitted with a magasin. So 4 cartridges in the magasin and one in the spout. I bring another magasin in my breast pocket. That enables me to shoot (theoritically) 9 rounds in no time.

As You can see there is no place for an ammo belt.

Uncle Mike nylon elastic belt slide plus one round in each pocket of my coat and trousers. Unless the pocket contains something else metallic.

Litlbigd,

Like 450 NE No2 I like a Murray's Leather's cartridge belt. Mine is twelve rounds and is made for a lefty, like me.

Some prefer other belts with thicker loops material, but I've had no problems or wear isses with my belt and it is so comfortable, even in 110* heat, that I forget that its on.

After carrying a side arm for 20 years I am used to a heavy belt that has extra magazines and lots of other gear. However, for safari I use a one inch leather belt with two cartidge holders that is belted on loosely.
