Tom

I found the article by Ross Siefried ( Giant Stoppers ) in Guns & Ammo- High Power Handguns
He touched on the Howdah in this story ,but it was more on 577 revolvers by Bland & Tranter
Also the revolver by Bowen in "577" that looked like giant model 10 S&W as you said on a Ruger Redhawk
that you cannot get with out a destructive device class 3 license .I was after a 577 Tranter here ,but when I tracked the owner down it had been stolen in a break in !
I sure would love a 577 revolver followed by 577 D/B Howdah !!

Thanks

Guns and Ammo did a feature article on Howdah pistols back in the 70's. It was excellent, BTW, with 3 or 4 guns being fetured. One was a side by side 12 bore, and another, a 4 barreled .577 Snider. I believe the other was a double 16 bore. Both 'bore' guns were both rifled and a block of concrete was blasted with the 12 bore for fun - great stuff.
: I may have to dig out the Digest to re-read that one.
; The Tranter that Ross used for the article would make a fun 'conversation piece' in the staff room of a police station, if worn by a memeber. Big holster, too.

Sounds like the article "Frontier Manstoppers" from 1972, in which Howard French described a bunch of howdah pistols, claiming them to be "man-stoppers". Bit of a crock, really, but perhaps he just didn't know any better.

A worthwhile article by Seyfried detailed a lovely best-quality howdah pistol by Dougall, built on the lock-fast action. If I get time, I'll dig out the article: either Handloader or Rifle a few years ago. Anyone else have the reference...?

Marrakai,

The Seyfried article about the Dugall was in Double Gun Journal. I don't know if it was in another publication as well. It was a great article and made me lust for just such a howdah.

It was a rifled 16 bore, as I remember, and was on a lockfast action. Quite a fine piece.

Thanks Curl, my memory must be at fault (I blame the grog! )

Anyone know which issue?

If somebody doesn't come up with it first, I'll search my DGJ issues when time allows. I know I have it.

You're right, it was by Howard French. I do believe they would be "Man Stoppers", but of course, not specifically designed for that, originally.

Ahhhh Yes! That's the same issue that has the article about clamshell actioned double rifles. A great issue, especially when you look at the drivel in DGJ now.

That Dougall howdah is to die for. The lockfast action is cool as ice. The hammers are nothing but sexy. The condition subperb. Such a beautiful double!

I thought I would show my Howdah pistol. It's a little different than some others that have been shown but has a lot of class for an over and under IMHO. Yes they made over and unders back in the good old days, too, even has a single selective trigger. It shoots which ever hammer is cocked or one right after the other, if you feel like cocking them both at the same time. This one was made by Gastinne Renette of Paris and is roughly 69 caliber rifled. It is hard not to like a pistol that was made for the specific reason of giving a guy the capability of fighting back when things were going bad and the future looked worse and short. If guns could talk, these are the ones I would like to listen to.

I love that 2nd pistol posted by b1acksmith. That is the action we need for the modern 577 lite nitro. The Jones underlever with hammers is too cool.

Marrakai, if you have that article, it would be much appreciated as well.

Thanks to both gentlemen if you are able to help.

348srfun,

That is a fantastic little piece! Do you shoot her often? What is it like to shoot her?

Good hunting!

mehuklamdar, as much as I would like to, I have not taken the risk of damaging a pistol that, to me, could not be replaced. I did think, at one time, I might have a set of steel barrels made to fit and enjoy shooting it, but I never have.
