Stalking Rifle Conversion
      #71402 - 13/02/07 03:43 PM

Has anyone considered converting a H&R or Remington Sparten rifle to 9.3x74R, 400 NE, or one of the 450 NE cartriges? The actions would seem to be strong enough. They are both produced chambered for 270 Win. I would expect it to be the lowest cost conversion of that type. Most of the work would be in fitting the extractor. What do you think? Are they too crude of a gun to be worth while?

Hi Rev,
The Baikal single shot rifle IZH-18MH,which is the same rifle as Remington Sparten is factory chambered in 9.3+74R on there home site ! so one could most likely go larger.
I have a 500 NE 3 1/4 barrel on a New England SB2 same as H&R ,i have shot full Nitro 570 Grs in it recoil is savage, so just of late ( As i,m getting old and weak ) i have been loading Nitro for Black to use in it ,still very powerfull and more usefull on most things .
All started as a big quiet rifle (sub sonic) for big game .
But yes the N/E H&R is a little crude to spend a lot of money on ,The Baikal AkA Sparten is well made with some good features add some nice wood and full size barrel from chamber looks good ,just a little hard on the cocking .
Hope this is of some interest to you ?

Just to add to the soup, I have a H&R Buffalo Classic that I had rechambered to 45-120. Thats pretty close to 450 NE

Hi Rev & others,

I have a .45-70 in Baikal IJ-18 (Same as that IZH-18 above). Not a NE but a big bore cartridge in any case. I have also the original 12ga smooth barrel and 12ga rifled barrel in that same gun. The latter is built on Hastings blank.

I had the .45-70 built mainly for subsonic loads with heavy bullets, and there's also a suppressor on the barrel. I use it for general plinking and for experimenting with light loads of fast burning powders, and also for whitetails and roe deers. Here in Finland most of them are shot from the feedind stations at dusk or during the night, and this seems to be a nice silent tool for that. I got it just a few months ago, and I've been able to develop only a couple of good loads so far. I shot one deer with it some six weeks ago, and the gun + load made just what they were supposed to; a clean kill with no wasted meat. Edible up to the edge of the bullet hole, literally.

That rifled slug barrel I have had for years. I've shot a couple of deers with that also, but sabot slugs are only rarely used here, and their selection on the market is poor. So far I haven't found a cartridge, which would shoot consistently from that barrel. Now I've got some Lyman cast slugs and W-W wads waiting.

Second hand IJ-18s are very common here, and they are usually sold only for some a 30-50€ - that is approx. 40-60 USD.

The smith, who made the slug barrel for me, have converted these guns in a bunch of various chamberings. Those include at least .50 Alaskan and his own .50-110 based wildcat. I recall him stating that the metallurgy in older IJ-18s (those with a short, or 'one-finger' cocking lever spur) is somewhat stronger than in those of current production (long two-finger spur).

Regards,
Saku

Sakmyk

Thanks for that info, I have been trying to get some one here in New Zealand to make me a barrel in 50 Alaskan to make into a quiet one, as you can get 975 gr cast slugs, which I think would be usefull at 1000 fps,I have been useing the 45-70 sub sonic for years on all our deer and wild cattle ! a bit light for cattle ,so the 50 Alaskan would be better .I would have thought the new rifles in calibers up to 30-06 & 9.3-74 should have stronger actions than the older shot guns .Is your gunsmith very knowledgeable on these actions ? Also if you know some one selling 50 cal barrel please let me know ,or you wish to sell your 12 bore barrel ?

Thanks again !

Hi Sarq,

so nice to hear that there are also others using subsonic big bore on game.

I guess that this gunsmith is knowledgeable in this matter as he has made tens of these IJ-18 conversions. I reckon he used the old model exclusively. He has also made several shotgun/DR conversions as well as falling block actions from scratch. I know that he has done the action strength calculations on these by himself. Based on this all I suppose that he knows about those things.

Another point is that both the old AND the new ones may well be strong enough (and I believe they are, as Baikal currently makes those chamberings you mention). I just remember this smith saying that the old model was stronger, but that's all. However, I want to emphasize that we had this discussion many many years ago, and at that time the production of the new model had just started. If I'm right the new model was available in those days only in 12gauge and .222 Rem.

I moved away from him and I haven't been in contact with him for years. I don't know about his current endeavours.

I'd just love to help you with this. As I said we have plenty of those second hand single barrel Baikals for sale here... And I was about to put up a business in used gun import/export this year, but only yestarday I got a good full time job in game mgmnt that'll start in a few weeks and last at least for two years. Unfortunately for you I'm not willing to sell my own barrel either.

I suppose you have the gun already, as you asked only for a barrel. Let me suggest you the following: If you're not able to get a spare barrel, then find a competent gunsmith and ask him to make an IJ-18 'monoblock' from scratch using yours as a model. The construction of the block & extractor is simple and it is relatively easily machined. Actually, this is what this Finnish gunsmith mainly did. Of course he used also sawed off monoblocks, but mainly he used these home made ones that he machined in small series.

I visited NZ in 2003 with my wife as we attended in a biological congress in Christchurch. We got engaged during our visit and we had the greatest time as we drove around the Southern Island after the congress. At least in those days the Shooters Supplies in Christchurch had some used Baikal SxS guns. It might be worthwile to ask them for the single barrel. You never know... you just might get lucky.

Regards
Saku

Sorry Sarq,

I just realised that you've already posted in this thread earlier. I thought this last one to be your opening.

Saku

I have an NEF sb2 45-70 which I reamed to 45-120 also, as I had that reamer on hand. It's the 22" barrel. I loaded .450 nitro equivelant loads in it for a few shots with a hornady 500gr., and it handles it, but the little gun is just simply not built for this. While fun for a few shots, it's not something I would consider anyone doing out of hand. It is simply dangerous in these. Mostly due to the design, and poor lock-up. Falling-blocks are the best.
