470 Capstick
      #7124 - 20/01/04 01:35 AM

Fellows,

I am seriously considering having a 470 Capstick made up for my next African trip. I will be hunting Buffalo, Lion, and possibly Leopard. What actions would you suggest for this conversion? I am currently considering a CZ 550 mag action or maybe a Win. 70. I will not consider a push feed mag, only a CRF for DG. Thanks for your suggestions!

I have 2 - 470 capsticks, and it is a great cartridge. I prefer a mauser action to start, but a mauser is a more expensive route. The advantage of the cz550 is that it holds more rounds. Also, with a model 70 you will need to either change the box or figure out some trick to get the magazine to hold 3 rounds down.

I am building one now on an Enfield action But I am told this is the hard route. I have my own machine shop equip so I dont have to pay for all the work.

As I understand it - The 470 Capstick is nothing more than a 375 H & H lengthened and blown out to accept .470 bullet. It is a bit more powerful than the old 470 NE IIRC. Named after the great Peter Capstick. Good for elephants, buff, and Wooly Mammoth's (See my other post).

I have a Winchester 70 in 470 Capstick. I am very pleased with the quality of the work done. Mine is the Custom African Express from the custom shop. It has the Oberndorf floorplate for an extra round in the magazine (4 + 1). Winchester made the gun to my measurements-- fits perfect!
I notice that this chambering is only available in the Custom Safari Express now-- mine was ordered in 1999.

For those that are not aquainted with the Capstick. It fires a 500 grain Woodleigh .475 Bullet at 2450 fps. I get 2480 fps from a 500 grain Barnes XLC. Best of all, I get 2220fps from a Barnes 600 grain round nose. I have also loaded up some super varmiters---- 400 grain .475 handgun bullets at 2840 fps.

The .470 Capstick is the .375H&H necked up and blown out, but it is not lengthened.

You can start with .375H&H, .375 Basic, .416 Remington, Hornady's Basic belted magnum, or .458 Lott brass.

When I start with .375H&H brass, I take it up in steps: .375"-.400", .400"-.450", .450"-.475". The result is a wasp-waisted case; a 70% charge with 400gr. bullets blows it out to final dimension.

No need to fireform 470 capstick brass!

You can buy it from Quality Cartridge, or get some HDS.375 cylindrical and just run it through the 470 capstick sizing die.

Properly headstamped (470 Capstick) and formed cases are also available from MAST Technology (BELL Brass) for $100.00 US per 100 or $25.00US per 20.

George,
you could use 458 Lott brass but it would be short...
