.400 Nitro Express

Hello

I am being offered a Holland & Holland, Royal .400 Nitro Express (the old 3 inch black powder cartridge converted to smokeless powder). The rifle is nitro proofed.

The double rifle is in very good condition. I do not intend to use it for dangerous game but need to know if any one of you have had experience with this caliber and what do you think of it as a medium game caliber.

It's a great calibre and will flatten medium game.

Is the gun you are looking at a Sidelock Ejector in
very nice condition ?

Reason for asking - I was talking to Holland about an
H&H Sidelock Ejector in 400.

It was a great looking gun if it's the same one.

Very few made.

Yes it is a Royal Sidelock but unfortunately it is not a 450/400, this rifle is a .400 Nitro Express the case is a rimmed one with a straight taper.

That chambering is more universally known as the ".400 Purdey", perhaps to avoid confusion with the .450/.400 x 3-inch cartridge.

A friend of mine, Vic P_, shot many buffalo with a couple of doubles so-chambered back in the meat-hunting days, though he would be the first to point out its limitations for today's DG hunting. Perfectly satisfactory for medium game, though.
