Merkel vs Chapuis ???
      #71157 - 10/02/07 02:34 PM

I assume that both of these are solid entry level DR's. What has been the experience of those who have owned one or both? Are they a good value? Or should the $$ be saved for something more expensive? If so, what?

The price of Doubles is wild.

Prior to my Merkel I had nothing at 1/2 its price.

The Merkel can be had probably cheaper than the Chapuis, possibly in 470 NE.

I had a 470 NE and traded up with New Guy @ Double Gun Imports for a 500 NE. Merkels don't handle/balance as well "in the hands" as more $$$ Doubles but they get the job done.

Handle a Merkel then a Chapuis, then a Heym/higher level entry Double, then an best quality English Double and you will appreciate the handling/quality characteristic of each better.

For me the Merkel is OK and will kill 'em just as dead as better quality Doubles if I do my part.

On the other hand if I could get a 450/400 best quality English Double with claw mounts,a qd Scope at a "fire sale" price(I'm dreaming here)-----

Have owned a Chapuis UGEX in 9.3x74r, a Merkel 470 NE and currently own a Merkel 141 in 8x57JRS. I can't really think of anything to detract from either make. I would take a Chapuis anytime and I would do the same with a Merkel. I think they are the absolute best buys on the market today in a double.

It comes down to ejectors (Chapuis) or extractors (Merkel). Unless you wait until the end of the year when Merkels get ejectors then it will come down to what comes along at what price. They are both good.

Merkel also has always had ejectors on the rifles up to 9.3X74R, as standard on the 140E models which are made on the 20 ga size action, and the new lighter, and shorter barreled 141, made on the 28 ga size action, up to 9.3X74R the ejectors are an extra cost option, but are available. The ejectors on all Chapuis are an extra cost option as well. As Showbart says later this year the Safari 140-2 rifles will be available with ejectors as well. In the Safari 140-2 the only chamberings worth thinking about are the 470NE, and 500NE. I'm hopeing that Merkel will get smart, and offer the rifle in 375H&H flanged, and 450/400 3" next year. If that happens, I'll likely have two more double rifles with MERKEL engraved on them, to add to the 470NE, and 9.3X74R I already have!

Yes, Mac, I meant the Safari series were getting ejectors. I spoke with Pete Yates at Merkel for a bit last week and he didn't mention any new chamberings. He did state, as you saw on AR, that Merkel makes barrel blanks for Chapuis. He also went on about how accurate the 470 is. Customer feedback and satisfation about this was really high. I ordered a 470 ejector, wanted the 500 but common sense won out. The most common sense being that I think the Merkel 500 may be built too light.

I don't see where Chapuis offers extractor guns.

Is not the UGEX an extractor?

You are correct. I have tunnelvision and was speaking only of big bore safari models.
