Maybe I should hunt Oz.

With the cost of hunting in Africa quicky appoaching "too expensive" I now am considering an Australia buffalo safari. Can some of you fellows from down-under tell me about your buffalo hunts?

Bonanza-

I'm with you on this one. I was and am shocked at the price increases for African hunts I saw at DSC and heard about from feedback from those who attended SCI.

An example - a $6000 PAC elephant hunt jumped this year to almost $11,000. Apparently, these increases are not due to cost increases in Africa but to the fact that demand is up - this year. With price oncreases like that, a very large chunk of those interested in African hunts are priced out of the market.

No faster way here in the US to permanently cool interest in something than to start pricing things that look like gouging.

I looked into this over a year ago, and although I cannot recall the price details, OZ hunts were not bad.

I hope that I am wrong but my recall of previous threads is that the price was comparable in Australia and Africa.

As stated above maybe the good folk in Australia could suggest certain types of fun hunts with Buff + other game available.

The statement about African hunts is correct--the asking price is becoming way too high.Is this because business is up or down?? Are more hunters going to Africa than previously? Are the baby boomers hunting Africa more than their parents?

I have also wondered about the quality of African game available.A friend who has taken several Ele feels the bigger bulls are being removed faster than they get older and bigger. He feels it is harder to get a 40" Buff due to increased hunting pressure as well.

We have the same problems as Africa in that large distances can b travelled unless you do a hunt on one of the "farms".

Quite a few good operators out here, a few who post on this forum. NitroX, myself and others can point you in the right direction.

Matt Graham, Hunt Australia is the only one who springs to mind at this god unearthly hour of the morning.

Why not do Buff, Scrub Bull, Pigs, Donkey, Camel, Goats and then head south or east to hunt some deer ??? Fallow, Red, Sambar, Hog (April only), Rusa, etc or New Zealand on the way home to hunt a variety of deer and other species - Thar etc. And plenty of great fishing to be had in Australia and NZ -after all, NZ has some of the best fly fshing in the world.

Hope this helps.

How about a 4 man hunt for 100 Buff plus pigs and donkeys?

6 days for around US$11000.00 each.

Mickey,

In your dreams !!!

Didn't you leave an "0" off before the decimal point !

Interestingly, having just come back from up there, the cost of doing business has skyrocketed - last year petrol was Aus$1.82 a litre !!! (Approx US$1.31 @ the then exchange rate of .72).

Are the buffalo there dangerous, or is it like shooting Bison in the US - no challange. What are the chances of getting killed? Are they tough to bring down? Like I said, I'm having a hard time stomaching the prices in Africa and would love to come to Australia.

Mickey

Your post says 100 x Buff, Pigs and Donkeys.

Is that 100 or all ?

You then say 1 x 100SCI Point then $1500 for all others.
Is that $1500 for all other 100+ SCI Point Buff ?

Bonanza

I would answer it this way. They are capable of killing you, they will charge if put in the situation, you should give them every respect any potentially DG game should be given. They are tough and can be hard to put down - every one is different.

Although they are said not to be as cunning as cape buff (like laying an ambush), we had to track a wounded Bull a few weeks back - we tracked the blood / spore and found it 50 yards from where it was wounded, in a heap of thick (and I mean THICK) saplings with it's ass back up to a burnt tree stump. You tell me it wasn't waiting for us !!! (Luckily when we go to the saplings, my mate figured it was there somewhere and waited for it to move slightly. It still took 2 shots from the side (we wouldn't see it's head) and then when it was down I still had to put one though it's head - just to make sure).

What are the chances of getting killed?
Not high but don't do anything stupid - a 1 ton Buff will flaten you if given the chance.

Mick is going to need a new alias soon, "Buffalo Mick" from the sounds of it.

However if he shoots more donkeys than buffalo as could be quite possible, should it be "Donkey Mick"?

(Mickey, only joking! Sounds like real fun).

Bonanza

Two outfitters I would consider and have!

Matt Graham of Hunt Australia. Matt operates in choice areas of Arnhemland for water buffalo and also separate trips for pigs (not a lot of pigs in Arnhemland), plus specialised culling shoots for large numbers of ferals. Plus deer in New Calendonia etc.

Graham Williams of Australian Buffalo Hunters also has Arnhemland concessions, also does station hunts which are somewhat cheaper in price where combined buffalo and pig etc hunting can be done.

Both Matt and Graham are members here but we haven't seen Graham for too long!

Price can vary anywhere from around US$4500 to $8000 for a five to seven day trophy buffalo hunt (depending on area ie Arnhemland is more expensive, numbers of hunters eg 2x1 vs 1x1 etc). But speak to the outfitters themselves as I may not be up to date.

Mickey's hunt sounds amazing but remember it is effectively US$44,000 for a 4x2 hunt (all up). But 100 buffalo is unheard of today.
