Pecar-Berlin officially out of business!
      #70648 - 02/02/07 07:46 AM

Following the recent death of Peter Schubert, Pecar's agent in Australia... I contacted the factory direct to see if I could get some spares and check if they could still service scopes.

Got this reply:

"Thank you very much for your mail. Unfortunately it's too late now,
Pecar is out of business.

Our rent contract for our factory space is cancelled after 50 years
and Pecar has not the financial background to move to new factory space.

Sorry we have no better news.

Bye, bye
PECAR-BERLIN
M.Schwarz"

SO, sadly... that's that

In those endless Pecar vs Kahles discussions many of us have had during our shooting lives, it looks like Kahles won after all...

I sent him this reply:

"Dear Mr Schwarz

I am greatly saddened to hear that news, as I'm sure many shooters here in Australia who have used your scopes over the past 50 years will be.

The Pecars still in circulation will at least live on to delight another generation of shooters in the future.

They will be a testament to your dedication in producing these superbly crafted scopes... made with care in the 'old fashioned' German tradition of quality.

I wish you and your employees all the best for the future, and good luck with any future business ventures... "

Has anyone on the forum based in Germany or with German connections heard whether the business may be bought out and given enough capital to re-establish themselves in new premises?

I guess Kahles was in the same situation before they got bought out by Swarovski.
We can only hope... they are really great scopes, and it is very sad to see another historic company go under.

Mate, with the way the world is going - alot of people buying on price and not understanding what quality is - it's surprising some have lasted that long.

In addition, the proliferation of low end scopes, both in terms of low price for OK quality makes it hard on the old school manufacturers.

However, their is still a market at the higher end and hopefully some will still produce the goods in the future.

I have 2 pecar scopes, both fixed 6x.
One of them is in claw mounts on a Steyr Mannlicher 308. I fell off a cliff and dislodged some of the internal coating, it showing up as black flecks on the lenses.

When the SHOT show was in Dallas several years ago I asked Hans Bender of Schmidt une Bender if he could fix it.

He said he could, but that he new the Pecar people and would be happy to take it to them.

I tried to give him some money as I needed the scope back as it was on my favorite rifle.

He said they would advise on the price.

A few weeks later I recieved my scope back woth a nice letter from Pecar stating they were happy an American hunter was using their product. They advised me that they had replaces everytning but the tube [the claw mounts were half rings soldered to the tube], anf that these new lenses had an improved coating.

When I reattached the scope to the rifle it was still sighted in perfectly.

What attention to detail!

The price, not one cent.

A class company. I am sorry they are out of business.

I emailed S & B and and asked them if they had taken over Pecar and do they do Pecar repairs. I received a reply from a Klaus Gorzel in their service Department who stated they had not taken over Pecar and that I contact:

Ulrich Kothe
Gruner Weg 14
35578 Wetzlar
Tel 0049 (0) 6441-28692
Telefax 0049 (0) 06441-26432

I assume this is a scope repairer in Germany.

Hopes this helps.

My family are in the optics business and my mother now owns our 100 year plus old company in India. I e-mailed Pecar to ask them if they would be interested in investment from outside in order to continue the business but never heard back. Sad...

As far as repairing scopes is concerned, I am sure that there are many shops that could do that though very often the cost of repairing a scope is just shy of buying a new one.

With Pecar closed and Docter now a brand under which Zeiss sell their low end scopes, two fine East German names are, sadly, dead.
