Wanted advice on new dog
      #7063 - 18/01/04 03:25 PM

OK I currently have a GSP. I want to get a second one oneday so I have a working pair. But have been holding off due to the time consuming training of a puppy requirements.

What I am thinking of instead (still will get a second GSP oneday) is a smaller dog. Either medium or small.

The dog would need to be multi-capable.

Used a lot to help hunting rabbits in the fields and vienyards.

Used to help track game and wounded game such as deer, goats, roos and pigs.

I like the idea of a dog which locates pigs. NOT a holding dog but a finder.

Perhaps something like a terrior ro a simialr breed. Agile and fast and quick to get out of the way.

Also a loyal dog and a good mate whom isn't aggressive to children (or not mauch anyway).

Please provide any leads and photos are very welcome. Email me them if necessary.

Once the breed has been narrowed down then I will have t he trouble to find it in Australia and also hunting parents But that's for the future.

Well the JRT has the heart of a lion and we had about 20 at any one time for foxhunting doing dens with them after the bush had been run by the bigger dogs, nothing for us to have a dozen dogs out for the day with some home in reserve.A great little dog but i myself would recommend a full size foxy nitro or a full size foxy crossed with a whippet makes a great little non aggressive dog that will catch and kill foxes, push rabbits out of bracken, hang off the arse of a pig (nuts) or at least find and bark not eat much and be a staunch and truly loyal ally mate,my old mate Alan Mc had 1/2 doz of these and they worked all game from pigs( they actually caught plenty) foxes and hares......hard workers that dont stop all day whereas the smaller JR`s are a bit short in the leg for all day hunting in the hills mate,i have even seen JR`s go down from constantly walking through wet nettles, the poor buggers start to foam at the mouth etc where the bigger dogs seem to handle them (netts) A foxy whippet to the old timers get the nod quite often due to their all round ability of toughness, pace guts and most importantly NOUSE !
And will soon learn to recognise a GSP on point etc in the right hands but i stress the dog is only as good as the work it gets and the master thats doing the educating.....up to you John.......

I like Jack Russells and Fox Terriers.

I had a Jack Russell staying with me for 2 or 3 weeks on the farm, my nephews, when they were on holiday.

Aggressive little buggers, used to tell my soft hearted GSP where to get off all the time, but they had great fun too chasing each other around.

I used to have a mongrel, part fox terrier and part corgi (unfortunate the second 'breed'). He was a brave little mut and would crawl down fox holes after foxes, hang on swinging cows and bulls tails for fun (until they swung their tails into a post - thud), plus was great to help in shooting foxes. Mostly untrained but he would sniff them out or sight them in the vine rows so I could shoot them, and at least once go and play with them so I could shoot it. Hares too.

Good ideas.

Any other breeds?

(I will pull out some dog books and have a look through and bring some up. At this stage I am only planning, as I wouldn't get a puppy to well after vintage.)

forget pulling out dog books they mostly will take you to Barb Woodhouse ( walkies)type show people a must to stay away from John, you need to purchase a farm bred either mongrel or pure from a line of dogs that has hunt hunt hunt ingrained in their blood mate, these are the dogs that do the right stuff not those that come from a long line of pedigreed hunting dogs that have never been hunting but have only been bred for the temperament and configuration etc.thus neglecting what they orininated for.
My only GSP bitch i had came from an old line of working dogs and at (true mate) 8 weeks was on point on a bloody blowie on a duck turd in the duck yard.....i couldnt believe it myself when i saw her hahaha, you ask for more breeds mate, why bother? a foxy/whippet will do all you want, but even english bull (1/8th and 7/8th`s foxy will make another handy those less pace type of dog that will force through blackberries etc
Get the Vic Weekly Times and look up the Kennel classifieds for well known dog breeders also the NSW "the Land" N/paper and failing that my mate Ian colley has www.boardogs.com and there are plenty of fellas there that will come up with something .Oh yeah why is it another must to go to hunting dog breeders other than show dog breeders? Well any dog that dosent cut the mustard for hunting gets shot while show people simply pass them on in the pursuit of the $$$$$$ instead of culling them as they should, yeah of course they will argue with that but i do have an insight into both sides.

What about a Jagdterrier?

Has anyone ever heard of the breed being in Oz?

Some photos from my researches:

yep have heard of them mate but not in Oz,hell there are so many handy breeds in the world in some of the books i have read that its almost impossible to list them, regarding the dog in the pic with the roebuck,i sold one of my old pigging bitches to another fella to catch feral pigs in a park and in the first week she caught 6 hog deer and she was no purebred by a long shot.....infact a shot wasnt even fired haahaha
Actually John the Draathar`s are growing in popularity with sambar stalkers in Vic,one would suit you well mate! But buy from working kennels only!

Yes the drahthaar is of interest.

I wonder though if its longer coat would pick up burrs?
I have a lot of prickles and burrs and wouldn't be interested
in a dog required a lot of grooming at all.

Siegfried my GSP just gets taken for a swim when he gets
dirty. That's it.

Also isn't this dog really another version of a GSP, almost the
same thing - weight, versatility, size, temperament - just quite
a different appearance ?

I do like the idea of a smaller dog and one which is part terrier.

Also my dogs go with me everywhere. How am I to fit them in
the car, on the motorbike, in the tractor etc all at the same time!

PS I've just realised, I've got a Winchester background on my
PC of a drahthaar holding a pheasant!

This girl is positvely "Valhallic".

Get a bigger bike mate!
I used to carry a big stag bitch and a 30 inch stag dog on my bike.one on the tank the other on a platform over the rear wheel mate, though i didnt like the slobber from a hard run dog going down the back of my neck hahaha.

Lets go back to the foxy cross mate.

If you don't want the dog to go in and hold, stay away from the terriers. They are fearless and love a scrap. How about
The springer spaniel?

I have only GSPs but have friends who are devoted to Brits. I think the Brittany is a more intelligent dog (overall) than the GSP. They certainly are more compact and easier on children (because they can't bowl them over so easily), safer to ride with in a car (an unrestrained GSP can be pretty disruptive if it spots some partridge by the side of the road). I don't know about the coat, but haven't heard any of my friends complain about the upkeep where I live, and it is a lot easier to clean up Brittany hair than GSP "quills" in cloth seat coverings. The downside of the Britts? Not as versatile as the GSPs, not as powerful for rough going, none of the style - we joke about trying to decide if a Brit is on point or not. I am not sure if the two breeds would complement each other in your household. I have always opted for German Shorthairs, and very few I know mix the two breeds - they are either GSP or Brittany people. Don't know why that is the case, but each teases the other endlessly about the shortcomings of their chosen breed.
