need recommendation for 338 win mag on moose and brown bear
      #70608 - 01/02/07 09:30 AM

Hallo at all,
i own a Winchester Mod 70 which is chambered in 338 Win Mag.
what bullet for hunting on brown bear and moose is recommended?
i think of the Nossler Partition 250 grs.will this be a good choise?
I have loaded some cases with250grs Sierra Gameking, but i think the bullets are to soft for this kind of animals.
What did you American hunters think and whats your experience ?

i believe i've shot most of the bears with nosler 300 gr partitions in a 375, and all ended up dead. Moose aren't that hard to kill, they don't know when they're dead sometimes. I don't use sierra on game anymore at all, they just have the habit of blowing up to often. A frames or barnes x"s are other good choices

nosler partition, swift a frame, trophy bonded bear claw, non bonded will come apart . And if you find a beach bear that has been rolling in the sand = body aurmor. I have only used barnes x on caribou they seemed to blow right through. My number 1 choice would be nosler partition.

I can say that a friend AR who has hunted Alaska says 338 cal Failsafes are good on bears and penetrate deeply. They might not expand as much as others and are finicky about what gun shoots them well though.Comments on Barnes bullets would be similar.

A different friend BW swears by the 250 gr partition .The Nosler partition would be excellent and are not as finicky about what rifle shoots them well. The bonded Aframe would seem better yet and would be my preference for penetration/expansion on bears.

I'd load premium 250s to 2700 fps., and I'd go with whichever one happens to shoot best in your rifle. I'd experiment with Nosler Partitions, Swift A-Frames, North Forks (240 gr.), Barnes Triple-Shocks, Woodleighs, and Speer Trophy-Bonded Bearclaws. Any of them would work for you extremely well, and you just can't make a mistake by trusting your very important hunt to any one of them.

Any moose of brown bear, no matter how large, that takes one of those bullets in the right place won't be long for this world, pure and simple.

The 338 Win. Mag. is one of my favorite all-around cartridges, and I've been shooting it for nearly 27 years. It's a superb killer.............

Stay with the 250gr. or heavier bullets unless using one of the failsafes or Barnes TS. Then, the weight can be reduced a bit to maybe 225gr. with them. End to end penetration is what you are after - with an exit if possible. That rules out all of the Sierra or bonded bullets. They work fine on Moose, but are lacking on big bears.
: The old Speer 275 was a terrific bullet for moose - too bad it's gone now. I would not be concerned about it on big bears, either. I tend to prefer something in a .458 calibre personally, but the mille ones like the .338 are just fine.
