Break Open actions
      #70597 - 01/02/07 06:36 AM

I love the looks of the Blaser and secondly the Merkel but can't aford the price. Baikal (Remington) is very affordable but less attractive and I don't like the break lever. Mossberg is just plain, plain. Any other recommendations?

I already have one! If I listened to my wife I wouldn't need anything else so I hope you don't mind if I don't listen to you either.. .

Well, WebleyBoy has missed a chance to jump in here, so I'm going to play proxy: (with apologies!)

The H&H top-lever hammerless rifles are the most elegant single-shots by far IMO.

Glad to see we all have a sense of humour on this site.

Sometimes it can get a bit "heavy" ?

AGREED, but IMHO only the type shown with a top lever.
Not a great fan of the H&H Sidelever Single Shots.

Marrakai

I agree that H&H makes a beautiful gun. Did you see the one listed in Gunbroker? http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=65073623

I wish it was chambered in something other than 22LR

Dan

The one on gunbroker is exactly how I like them - but agree, I would have liked mine to be in something other than 22LR but alot of them were resleeved.

HDR.

I recently picked up an old Savage 219 and as opposed to first glance, it's beginning to grow on me.
Cased reciever, decent blue and walnut stocks. The only part that isn't steel is the trigger guard but I am sure that is fixable if I decide to.
Better yet, it has a tang safety and is striker fired.
Gun is chambered in 30-30 and shoots well enough. This one just has iron sights but later models came tapped as well.
Weighs about 6.5#
Saved about $500 over the german stalking rifle I was looking at that was equally as plain.

My first varmint rifle was a Savage 219 in (you guessed it) .219 Zipper. I also had one in .22 Hornet. For the money, they couldn't be beat. I just had them drilled and tapped for target scope bases and installed a Unertl Small Game 6X scope, and the rest is history.

I have an H&H with an action identical to the one on GunBroker. Unfortulately, it was also relined, but the desecration didn't stop there. The barrel was cut off with a hacksaw, the rib was drilled and tapped for any number of scope bases, and the stock was shortened presumably for a child to use. I picked it up for $100 in London in 1973 and have been at a loss for what to do with it ever since.
