Visiting firearms laws

Hi all,

As some of the Aussis know I'm planning to visit your great country next summer. I've a conference I'm planning on attending so the job will at least cover the airfare. Looking to meeting Nitro and Gryphon and some others for hunting!

What are the proceedures for a foreigner to bring a rifle or two into Australia. My conference will be in Brisbane, and I'd like to hunting in Victoria and also South Australia.

Thanks!

Chasseur

If you are not bringing a firearm and just borrowing one, in SA it is no problem if hunting/shooting with a licenced hunter.

If planning to bring your own firearms you will need to organise a visitors firearm licence. Just some paperwork. I will telephone for you as I need to speak to them anyway.

Victoria, if no one here knows, we can find out as well.

My understanding is that Victoria requires a Temporary Visitors Permit that can only be obtained with a registered safari company named on it. No other states permit can be used in Victoria. Not sure if you are going to hunt on public land there (without an outfitter) but it may be a chicken-or-the-egg deal with that, as I dont think you can get a hunting licnece without a Temp Visitors Permit and vice versa.

SA doesnt have their own permit, so they accept those of other states where you are travelling or entering the country. As Nitro said you can hunt there with a licenced shooter but Im not sure if that applies to international guests?? For our clients hunting in SA, we just get them a Vic or NT licence, whether they are bringing guns or not...

Qld is tricky - it would depend on whether you are actually going to use the firearms there or not, or if you are using someone elses gun, etc, etc. If you are hunting they do require a permit with guide/outfitter noted but a letter of permission from property owner may suffice - I'm not sure on that?? NB. that doesnt work in NT, VIC or NSW.

NT is the same as VIC - you must get the NT Visitors permit wether you bring a gun or not. They do not accept other state's permits.

NSW - same as NT and VIC.

WA - who knows??

So really it depends on where you are going to actually hunt, who you are going with and whether you are bringing your own guns..... and ...whether you want to do it 100% legally. Some people are coming to different states of Australia, not bringing a gun with them and just hunting with friends without any kind of Visitors Permit (that equivalent to our Fireams Licences). That's OK... except ...it's illegal!!

Cheers
Matt
