.450 #2 ,actual chronographed loads with 500 grain bullets
      #69713 - 18/01/07 09:57 AM

I'm wondering if anybody here has actually chronographed the loads that they shoot in their .450 #2 with 500 grain, not 480 grain or 450 grain, etc? I've seen a few posts where people quote what they THINK they're getting. I went to the range today with 4 different loads. The barrels are Douglas Supremes, 25 1/2" long. Air temp was about 20 degrees Fahrenheit, it was solid overcast so no direct sunlight on skyscreens, and a brand-new battery in the Chrony. 4 shots were fired with each load, 2 rights and 2 lefts. The velocity given is the average of the 4. Over the 16 shots, and with all four loads, the left barrel produced exactly 30 fps less than the right barrel. Except for powder, all components were identical:

Case: Bertram
Primer: Federal #215
Bullet: Hornady #4504, 500 grain RNSP
Filler: 2 grains of dacron

Load #1: Reloader 15, 88.0 grains........Velocity: 1981fps, Extreme Spread: 60fps
Load #2: Reloader 15, 89.0 grains........Velocity: 1966fps(note,1 grain more, 15fps slower) ES:44fps
Load #3: Reloader 15, 90.0 grains........Velocity: 1997fps Extreme Spread: 53fps
Load #4: IMR 4831, 106.0 grains........Velocity: 2041fps Extreme Spread: 74fps

The 4831 load showed noticeably more flattening of the primers, not severe but certainly this load is giving higher pressure than any of the three R-15 loads. I'm frankly a bit disappointed as I thought that it would be very easy to get 2050 with this cartridge. I'm wondering if anyone else out there has similar ACTUAL data, perhaps with a different powder, that IS giving higher velocities than these with no signs of high pressue? I have to settle on a final load for this gun so that I can begin the regulation process, so any input would be appreciated.

Ron-

Please excuse my somewhat off-topic question, as I don't have 450no2 chrono data for you.

Is that particular model of Douglas barrel air-gauged?

The velocity difference between the barrels is why I ask.

Good success to you in your regulation efforts. I'm happy for you in your success so far.

I don't think that Douglas ever produced air-gauged barrels in .458 calibre. I'm not positive of that but I believe it to be true. A difference in velocity between barrels is normal rather than uncommon.

Thanks for the reply-

All of my double rifles chrono differently from right to left too.
Still I'm compelled to wonder if air-gauged and consequently matched barrels would chrono closer.

No worries or concerns here, just curious.

I'll be sitting back enjoying your reports.
Again, the best wishes of success to you...

ronvella,

My 450#2 is a Ruger No.1 ( a 1H in .458 Win.Mag re-chambered to 450#2. 24" barrel ).

Case: Horneber
Primer: F215M
Bullet: Hornady 500gr RNSP
Powder: 105gr H4831
Filler: Case topped off with Puff-lon ( While I've never experienced any trouble with this filler, I'm looking to switch to foam after reading of others experience with it, during long term use.)

I get right at 2150 fps and no pressure signs whatsoever. Two friends also use this same load in their vintage British doubles, with the same results. I'm not sure what filler they are using.

Jeff

akjeff,
That's very interesting. As you see above, I only got 2041 with 106 grains of IMR 4831. What length is your barrel, 26"? Maybe I need to try Hodgdon's instead of IMR.

I thought that interesting as well. The barrel is 24". I have not tried IMR 4831. I'll be shooting with a new barrel on this gun in the future, as I've since taken off the factory tube, and am in the process of having it replaced with a different contour.

A heavier contour I hope. Those rifles are a tad too light for comfortable shooting with this calibre!

Hey, thanks for the loads. I have a 450#2 and was just about to try some 500 grain bullets.

Not really heavier nor lighter, just distributed differently. I wanted to lighten the muzzle, and shift more weight towards the middle. I found the 1H barrel way too muzzle heavy.
