GSP breeders in South Australia or Victoria?
      #69427 - 13/01/07 12:34 PM

Looking for contact details of good GSP breeders in South Australia and Victoria. Obviously am looking less for a show dog, but with good breeding, but with hunting genes.

Well being a German breed guy.. I have a Deutsch Drahthaar. I'd suggest that you have a look at the Kurzhaar. Which is the German Shorthair that still undergoes the testing under the JGHV system. That means that the parents have to pass hunting performance tests prior to being allowed to be bred. There is a real mess with the Kurzhaar and the GSP here in the US.

Like any breed this isn't a gaurantee that you will get a good/great dog but it sure does improve your chances of it by getting proven and tested dogs as the parents. Some breeders for Australia are as follow. No please keep in mind I know nothing of any of them.

Bill

So what is the difference between a GSP and a Kurzhaar, Kurzhaar merely being German for Short-hair?

No the big difference is the performance standards. See for Kurzhaar's to be called Kurzhaar's the parents will have had to pass hunting tests as well as conformation and display mental soundness. It is the only way for them to be able to be bred within the system. The nice thing is that each generation must prove itself before it can be bred, if they want to be called Kurzhaar's.

What it does is basically gaurantees that the dogs are from proven hunting stock. Also with the stringent health requirements it also greatly reduces things like hip dysplasia, bleeding disorders etc.

Good news.

I have also been given the names of three more breeders in SA and Vic, two of which reportedly use dogs used for hunting in the breeding.

The third breeder is actually the same breeder I got Siegfried from. For some reason I thought they were no longer in business but it appears that was my mistake. They have a couple litters, one born right now, and the other due in 8 weeks.

I want to look over the other SA one's as well, and maybe some of the Vic ones too.

Bill, thanks for the list above too. I assume these are "Kurzhaar" GSP breeders in Aust, so worth considering.

I like the extra attention to breeding that a "Kurzhaar" suggests.
