404 Jeffery

I know the guys over at AR have seen Stuart Satterlee's work, but I wanted to post photos of a 404 in the works that he's building for me.

It's built on his own mauser action as a double square bridge and will be finished off with claw mounts.

Nice! Thanks for posting. Maybe you can update with additional photos as the work progresses. We all get a vicarious kick out of such a project.

Chris:

Forgot to mention I meet Stuart at SCI and "fondled" your 404.....SWEET. Compared to my Express, it seems a bit lighter...nice carry but she may kick a bit more. He has my M70 action and is going to build my 404 (my son's actually) on a nice blank he has. You should be proud of that gun...it is very nice.

Thanks Gary - I'm glad you had a chance to see it.

My objective here was to end up with what I would call a "2150" 404. As such, the finished rifle (w/out scope) weighs 9.25 lbs. Add a swarovski 1-4 and hopefully it still comes in under 10 lbs scoped - light enough to carry and shouldn't be too bad to shoot with 2150 loads.

Great looking project. Stuart makes a stunning action and is a very talented gunsmith. I have one on order in 416 Rigby. Can't wait to get it in my hot little hands. When is your rifle supposed to be ready?

New Guy,

Lovely! When do we get to see the completed rifle pics?

Congratulations in advance and good hunting!

We've been waiting for a few months on the Swarovski Z6 1-6 EE scope with rail. (Good luck to you if you're looking for one...) The scope finally arrived last week.

After the scope and claw mounts are installed, the polishing has to be finished and then it'll be sent to the engraver (nothing fancy, but I want all markings on the bbl and action hand engraved.)

Then the metal is sent out for rust blue, the stock is sent off to be checkered... and we're done.

All-in-all, I hope to have it by the end of the summer.

I just recently saw pictures for the first time of his actions and know I have to have one. Vary good design and the workmanship looks to be on a par with the vary best of the Brevex actions if not better.

The pictures on his web site of his finished rifles leaves nothing more to be desired.

Your rifle is looking great Chris! How do you like the new Z6 scope? I haven't had a chance to handle one yet.

I like the Z6, but like all of the better European glass, it's a little on the big side.

How do you like the rail? Are you glad you got it instead of going the more traditional route? Have been debating between rail vs no rail.

Any more pictures?

It's a love / hate relationship with the rail scopes. Love them because the optics are great and the mount is second to none. Hate that the scopes that bear the rails are so large.

I would love to see a scope the size of the Leupold 1.5-5 (1") with a rail of some sorts.

An absolutely stunning rifle! Is case hardening and engraving planned or are you going to keep it conservative and simple?

Good hunting!

Thank you mehulkamdar.

No case hardening. It's made out of a pre-hardened 4140, which doesn't CC well, but it is getting some engraving. Nothing too fancy, just maker's marks, serial #, a pattern on the sight ramps, etc...
