Shooting .500 NE Krieghoff Classic Big Five from bench rest?
      #68524 - 02/01/07 10:11 AM

I've just purchased my first double, a .500 N.E. Krieghoff "Classic Big Five".
I've fired two rounds from a standing position, just to see what the recoil was like and how well the open sights were already pointing. The recoil was not as strong as I had expected, and I'll have no problem with it in a hunting situation.
HOWEVER, I'd now like to take a few shots from my bench, and I would appreciate advice on the extent to which I can add weight to my shooting rest so as to minimize the recoil to my shoulder--without any risk of initiating any cracking of the stock or other problems that too-solidly anchoring this gun might lead to.
Your guidance, please?.....
Thank you.

You really should not try and shoot from a fixed shooting sled. The rifle is regulated to shoot off of a shoulder that allows recoil. You will probably find your shots are spread a bit in a recoil sled.

Better to shoot standing. Maybe off of a tripod or sticks.

If you must shoot from the bench, keep your body as up-right as possible. Firstly, if at a public range, commandeer all the sandbags around you. Secondly, set up the rifle on the sandbags so that you can shoot in the up-right position with your left hand holding on to your fore-end. It may seem to be a bit unsteady sitting that high but it will help as far as absorbing recoil and not get head-aches.

A: Buy lead shot in the canvas bag.
B: Use the lead to make bullets.
C: Fill the bag with sand, sew end.
D: Place bag between shoulder and butt.
E: Shoot.

I agree completely with Mickey.

I like to shoot my 500 NE off either a shooting stick or tripod arrangement.

It's the closest think to shooting offhand, steadies the gun somewhat and handles the recoil better for me.Don't think I want to shoot leaning forward from a bench--major smackdown in that postion.

Just experiment and see what works!

Try a standing height bench rest. You mention that you are shooting of your bench...sounds like you own a bench and maybe the space to shoot as well. If so a standing height bench should be in your future.

The standing bench I often shoot from, at my almost local gunsmith's, is height adjustable from sitting to standing and the pipe legs easily extended to a height that allows for shooting while standing. Recoil sensation is a small fraction of sitting bench recoil and accuracy is excellent if your bench is sturdy enough to lean into.

BTW, this is how the rifle was regulated, more than likely.

How about a set of shooting sticks?

Rusty,

Shooting sticks do not allow for support of your right elbow - for a righty - and do not allow for support for your left elbow either.

Not good enough for developing loads, imo.

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments and suggestions!
I see my way forward, with a couple standing, quasi-bench options for the back yard.
Second stop, culling in Australia for practice this summer; anyone interested?

I talked a range officer ( you know the guy like the one that had too shoot the 600ne pistol) into cronning my 458 lott with 3 rounds . Man was that fun to watch seeing his head go from the stock to the middle of his back was great.
