Ejectors (not the debate) question
      #68523 - 02/01/07 10:10 AM

Man I'm glad I found this place. That "other" spot left me with my mouth agape. Phil's forum is nice too.

Considering first double for buff and it'll be a Chapuis or Merkel. Likely Chapuis, yes for ejectors, but the Merkel is still in the running as it's a good deal. I don't completely believe either those who badmouth the Merkel nor those who state the Chapuis is the undisputed king of entry level DG DRs with no apparent flaws. 470 NE looks good for either choice but I'm seeing alot of the Merkel in 500 NE online and in person. Have yet to even see a Chapuis in person but that may change in a couple of weeks.

My questions are; Will the ejectors kick out unfired rounds too? If so then does ejecting unfired rounds stress DR ejectors? Should/can one remove the unfired rounds by partially opening the action and before the ejectors kick? What about after firing only one round? I assume the ejectors try to kick out whatever is in the chamber if you open the action fully unless the spring is only strong enough to eject empties? Is one of the advantages of extractors the ease with which one can top off during a follow up? OK I guess there's a little bit of the debate here.

Welcome aboard Showbart - Conceptually, that's not how ejectors work.

Long story short, the ejectors on the chapuis will eject only fired cartridges. The unfired live ones are lifted up a bit out of the chambers (like on an extractor gun) and you can pluck them out with your fingers. You have no worries of live cartridges being ejected from the rifle.

Thx New Guy. That's what I thought. So topping off is a straight forward affair.

New Guy, FWIW, a close aqaintance who works for a huge outfitter here in central Texas spent time recently with a Heym rep putting a DR(PH?) thru some drills and came away very favorably impressed. So much so that as a bolt and lever gun fanatic he has become a recent convert to DRs and to Heym. He'll forego his safari this year to budget for the Heym. Was that rep you? I'd jump on one too were it not for my own $$$ constraints. Better for me tho because if a good deal on what I'm looking for comes into his store he won't buy it from under me!

Showboat

Welcome to NE.com.

New guy is correct on all Doubles with ejectors.

Have heard very good reports on new Heym. It is probably the best entry level Double available now.

Thank you Mick.

For me entry level is synonymous with price. I can get new a Merkel for just under $9K or Chapuis for just over that. The lowest I see a new Heym PH is $14K with most listing at MSRP of $14,700.

Guilty as charged. That was me.
