I have a Chapuis 45-70 double rifle. It was imported by someone named Trainer, I think. I'm guessing it came here in the late 70's or early 80's. JJ currently has the rifle to repair a broken ejector spring, so I can't check the name. This rifle has been reregulated to shoot Elmer Keith's load, 400 grain bullet at 1800 fps. I believe this rifle is adequate for any North American game, except the brown bear. I think most people overlook the fact that a 45-70 with these ballistics has a point blank range of about 200 yards.

QUOTE FROM ABOVE: "Stogger coach gun with 20" barrels sleaved for 50-90 sharps shooting 525Gr woodleigh at 1850 F/S for about 4000 Ft/Lbs."

I am really interested in this. Where can I get one of these conversions done?

Can you give us any other details?

Great info thanks.

(I am looking for a 'hell & back' yet reliable double rifle that has more take down than a 12 gauge double slugger with 607 grain Brenneke Black magic slugs and this sounds like a ton more take down, well, make that a half a ton more.... haha and should provide better accuracy)... I certainly would prefer taking this out for bear or big boars over the 12 gauge slugger)

I have used a Chapuis 9,3x74R quite a bit and find it perfect in every way.

It weighs 7 1/4 lbs without scope. It handles very well, is plenty powerful, adn with a scope I have taken game as far as 300 yards.

Also if necessary it can stand in for your big double on the big stuff, including cape buff and elephant.

I also just talked with Jason on the phone regarding his conversion double where he starts with a Stoeger (or Hulu, or Merkel) And, with that stoeger 12 gauge he converts it into a 50-90 sharps. Wondered what some of the other forum members here thought of that round, and / or what your thoughts are about that approach.

I am looking for a reliable, accurate, tough hunting double rifle, one that can deliver excellent knockdown power for anything North American woods or mountains can serve up. Jason recommended the stainless steel receiver model Stoeger with the 20 inch barrels.

Yogi:
With those ballistics, the .50-90 Sharps should be a marvellous North American conversion, go for it by all means, but I respectfully suggest that 20-inch barrels will feel too short for a hunting DR. Go with 24-inches if you can, this is still very short as far as double rifles go, but will be much nicer to shoot with. You might get away with 22-inches if you spend most of your time in the thick stuff, but 20-inch doubles are for the 'Cowboy Action' shooters IMHO!

Of course, it's your dollar. Let us know which way you jump. Pictures are always good!

Thank you Marrakai. Good input.

I do like the 50-90 using the Woodleigh 525 grainers loaded to about 2000 fps.

It seems the ideal double for hunting the States is the gun that you primarily use on BIG stuff, also the stuff that could hurt back. Such as Grizzly, Brown Bear, Mountain Lion, Big Boars or even Moose. This gun could be used on deer or black bear or smaller hogs too. But I think for shooting from mountain side to mountain side---you know, those LONG shots out west---you are talking a different gun.

Like many people here on this forum agree: there is NOT one gun that can do it all unless you are talking perhaps about a gun with three or four barrel sets and even then it is a stretch. But an idea double for hunting in the US is a big bore gun for big animals or animals that charge and you want stopping capability as opposed to long range attributes. (For those long range shots get a single shot or bolt, anything from a high wall to a mannlicher), but let's face it that long range shooting is not ideally double territory anyway so why not focus on what doubles are primarily designed for: 0-100 yards. Stopping pwoer with the quickest second shot of any gun. Ergo that means asking oneself what game would you really be hunting in the states at those distances? Regardless of the continent it still spells dangerous game or the big game similar to those mentioned.

I prefer the idea of a bigger verses smaller round for doubles. Sure I may often hunt deer with a "little" 243 but that is a different kind of hunting. When a person says double hunting I instinctively think: bang bang stopping power. Why would I need that second quick shot unless I wanted two barrels full of maximum and instant taming capability of something that could hurt me back. So, I would vote for a big double even here in the States because the primary uses here would still be to stop the big ugly ones. IMHO. Sure I might take it out to shoot a big ole buck too, but that is a secondary useage. IMHO.
