This could be the closest double rifle to perfection in my book.

Now I've heard everything!

It's a nice looking specimen all right, but my version of 'perfection' in a hammer-gun includes a top-lever. The TLH configuration can be racy and elegant, which an under-lever struggles to achieve, 'semi-self closing snap-action' notwithstanding!!

Thanks for posting the link though, Mickey. Love window-shopping for doubles...

Marrakai,

I consider both to be the most elegant double ever rifles made and perhaps the TLH is technically superior, but with added complexity. What clinches this one for me is it's a 500-450 and one spectacular H&H. So you ask, why don't you buy it? Because I already have a ULH 500-450! However not nearly as nice.

I like it a lot. At least from the pictures. A top lever hammer gun is the pinnacle for me as well Marakai, but, I could force myself to live with that.

That's a new one on me! Looks like a plain old Jones under lever to me!

Some of the later Jones type actions were snap actions. That is to say, the action snaps to the locked position as the barrels are closed. The lever and bolts are spring loaded like a toplever rifle.

My Purdey is such an animal.

Mac, another interesting feature is the third grip on the Jones action. My Purdey also has this feature. There is a sliding Purdey type bolt that engages a bite in the rear of the rear lump. I assume this H&H has the same arrangement.

You can see the third bolt in the above photo.

Gee that looks like my old gun - which was also the one owned by Graeme Wright and written up in his book.

They are fine pieces of workmanship and I wish I had killed something with it when I had it.

I'll have to go and check the serial number.

It's not the same gun.

The serial number of mine was 179xx, made in 1902.

Thanks CaptCurl, I see the purdey bolt in the picture! This is the first time I've come in contact with this feature! I have a jones lever 58Cal/20 ga cape gun that looks almost exactly like this one! It is also unusual in that the splinter forend is permently hinged to the action, and the barrel set is removed by opening the action, then releasing the forend Deeley lever, which releases the barrels from the forend iron! This also is the only example of this feature I've ever seen!
