If you were going to Africa and had your choice between a .416 rigby or a .458 winchester(Lott?), which would you pick, and why? Buffalo and down in size for game. Stll learning to use the search engine! Sorry if this is one of those topics that have been beaten to death.

This subject has been around the block a bit. Depending on how much recoil you're accustomed to, a 416 may be the way to go. But, on the other hand, the Lott can utilize cheap 45/70 bullets and both calibers shoot cast bullets very nicely. Speaking of cheap shooting, I believe 416 Rigby cartridges will be manufactured by another company and will give Federal a run for it's money. Try less than half the price. Also, Norma brass for the Rigby is pricey. Lott brass is very cheap and Hornady makes them.

Due to the availability of bullets, the 458 Lott would be more versatile in my opinion. You could load 350 gr bullets for plains game and 500 gr for the big stuff. I just do not see the selection of choices in the 416 caliber.

Happy New Year to All!!!!

I have a 416 Rem, a 416 Rigby as well as a 458 WM but no 458 lott. Why two 416's? I guess just cause I am a sucker for a good deal.

Ballistically I would consider the 416's better for hitting targets at distance than the 458 and compensating for the trajectory at distance.Theoretically 416 Rigby would be the more reliable rifle operating at lower pressures than the 458 WM. This should not be an issue with a Lott downloaded off max pressures. The 416 Rigby uses the larger action and this matters to some. The availability of components goes to the 458 Lott.

IMHO if I had to make a choice I would choose the 416 Rigby for Buff and smaller game and not look back. It's no 458 Lott on Buff but does other tasks adequately and easier. If I had the 458 Lott I would just work on getting closer for my shots!!

I don't know about other guys .458's, but mine puts 350gr. "X" bullets, traveling at 2,350/2,400fps, 3" high at 100 meters, with 500gr.softs and solids making 2,200fps while striking 1-1/2" high, same aiming point.
: This gives .470 Nitro-type ballistics with the 500's, while the 350's are only down 10" or 12" at 300 long yards.
: I suspect you'd never shoot past 200 or perhaps 250 yards on plains game and the 350 "X" would handle that quite well.
: With the appropriate modern bullet, one should be able to make the big bore do all the work necessay.
: On the other hand (one generally has two, a 9.3x62mm, or 64mm appropriately loaded would be a better plains-game cartridge and will still suffice with good bullets and shot placement on buffalo. I cannot stress the importance of proper shot placement and the 9.3's (or a .375) make that easier (for most of us) than any of the larger bores.
: Although my actual game experience doesn't go to Africa, the above makes sense to me. The large mediums worked 100 years ago, and should be even more effective today with the wonderful bullets available.

Aw, hell, go ahead and get both. That solves the problem.
