Looking for Ross Waghorn in Australia
      #67725 - 22/12/06 08:42 AM

I am trying to get some info on the history, regulation and loads for a Purdey 500-3" owned by Ross at one time. Anyone care to put me in touch, or to pass the message along?

I am assuming from the deathly silence that said double rifle has some issues.....I haven't bought it yet as there is no proof that the gun shoots. It's been restored and it would be a shame to buy a pretty girl that can't dance.

Why would you assume anything? George said the rifle is accurate. He usually ships ammunition with double rifles so that the buyer can shoot it before he bites, and he actually expects them to do so. Why not ask him about that before making an unfounded assumption? Better yet, why not have J. J. look the gun over and shoot it first? That's the prudent way to do it.

Maybe no one here knows about the rifle in question?

Who is George? Not the seller of this rifle.

And this rifle is being sold sight unseen, no firing privilege. It belonged to Waghorn, he was the last guy to fire the gun according to the seller. hence the need to get some input from Ross Waghorn.

I have no idea why anyone would buy something as expensive as a Purdey .500 double sight unseen!!

Have to agree on that statement. Why is the seller not allowing the rifle to be seen or shot?

BIG PROBLEM with that.

Thanks for that Gryph.

I did a whitepages search and found five R. Waghorn's and guessed he was the Boronia address, but couldn't remember which one he was from the past and didn't want to gice out possibly incorrect info. Didn't think to use firearms registry listings online.

GRYPHON / NITRO X
Can you delete the ADDRESS of Ross.

The correct number from the US is USA 011 61 3 9762 2438

You have USA 011 61 2 9762 2438
which the 2 represents SYDNEY.

Maybe if the double rifle is a proven shooter, there will now be lots of other interest.

By the time I found Ross (thanks to several posters) and talked to him about the gun, some other gent had stepped up and bought the gun, altough apparently the deal is not quite done yet. Turns out this gun has tapered bores and Ross used to make bumped-up jacketed bullets for it. It shot well with those but not with cast. Somewhere along the way, the bump die got separated. The current owner has never shot it.

Russ

Sorry to hear that - pity I went away hunting the day of your original post.

Plenty more guns around. I think sometimes you just have to take a "punt" on a gun and buy it.

Not directed at you as you had valid reason to want to talk to Ross but I've got a few doubles because a possible buyer took too long to make a decision or tried to negotiate a lower deal on what was already a good deal.

At least now plenty of people are available to solve any regulation issues.
