Barramundi and saltwater crocodiles?

When fishing for barramundi in a large billabong in Arnhemland last year a mate said I was mad for standing up to the thighs in the water. He said "where barramundi can get, so can crocodiles?"

What is the truth about this statement?

NitroX, the last time I was in Kwa-Zulu Natal, my PH arranged a trip to St. Lucia estuary, where his friend was the head game warden. The day before we got there, 2 fishermen were killed by crocs while fishing. They were both standing in water only slightly higher than their knees.

Aussie saltwater crocodile can take you standing several metres away from the water standing on the dry bank. They can jump in deep water about half their body length out of the water, using their tails. They do this to catch fruit bats etc.

Saltwater or estuarine crocodile can live in fresh water too, but the further you go inland the less likely. There were streams and pools were we swam which were reportedly free of salties. There may have been Johnson or freshwater crocs.

But my question was how true is the claim that if barramundi can get there, so can saltwater crocodiles?

Matt Graham answered on another forum, that it is possible.

Of course its true. Barra are spawned in the estuaries during the start of the wet season. They then disperse upstream during the wet-season flooding. Anywhere they can swim to, a saltwater croc can swim to also. The crocs can also walk overland to impoundments where barra cannot go. No barra doesn't necessarily mean no crocs!

I use the tell-tale signs of tarpon rolling as a general rule, tarpon are visible by their air-gulping behaviour, whereas barra are usually not visible from the shore.

If tarpon are rolling, there certainly could be salties there.

However, I agree with Bakes. NOTHING would convince me to stand thigh-deep in a billabong or river north of about Tennant Creek!
...unless there was a hundred-foot waterfall just downstream!
