Ruger M77 or No. 1 in 458 Lott
      #67507 - 20/12/06 11:20 AM

I am looking for a big game rifle and I am looking for a little feedback on these guns. I also would like something I can have worked on later to get one of the larger rounds. Is something larger than a 458 lott actually needed for really large game? Also is good quality 577 NE brass that is stamped 577 NE available on a regular basis?

If you want a 458Lott, get the Mod 77 RSM and just be happy. The SS is a bit light for the Lott and you'll have to add quite a bit of weight and get a new thicker recoil pad. In fact, a new thicker recoil pad is mandatory on the 77 also. You just might ask Clark about 577NE brass and where he gets his stuff for his Searcy.

I have both and can verify that the # 1 has alot more felt recoil, even though there is less than a pound difference. I like them both.

The M77 RSM is the one I had been looking at. I would like to get a little info from someone that has used one first hand to see what they like and don't like about it. Also a little info on what kind of accuracy they have been able to get out of it using factory loads vs custom loads. Also some people say that a 458 is good to hunt any game there is and some say it isn't. How much more could possibly be needed considering the choice of bullets you can load in it?

I've got an RSM in 458Lott only because I liked the wood on it. I've been lucky with my RSM's in that they all have good trigger pulls @ 3#, give or take a 1/4# or so. The Lott is definitely a bit more horsepower than a 458WinMag. I got a thicker recoil pad installed on it and put a bit of weight both fore and aft to insure a bit of balance. Using irons and factory ammo, I got 1 3/4", 3 shot groups when I was concentrating on loving the recoil. This was at 100 yds. When I wasn't concentrating on how much I really love recoil, I got 2 1/2" groups or worse. The rifle is glassed at the recoil points and relieved at the tang. The claw was smoothed out and all the small burs taken out. It'll feed flawlessly. As far as shooting, it literally is a BLAST. Of course, there are bigger guns and cartridges out there but after learning to handle it, it can be fun.

I love my RSM Lott. Literally, the favorite gun I have. Have not shot much with it YET, but have taken two whitetails with it with the open sights here in Texas. Both one shot kills using normal 500 grain woodleigh bullets at 2330fps(at least as stated by the load in Cartridges of the World-not sure what the actual velocity was out of mine).
Yes, I know, I always go out over-gunned.lol But, I've never had to track a wounded deer either.
Meat damage is no more than a 300-mag, which is often used here by others for whitetail.
Good practice can be had like this, for future, bigger stuff.

Those are wonderful also. I reamed one to .450-3-1/4, and I seem to have put it in the back of the cabinet after firing it a few times.--lol--it is too much trouble to move the rest of the guns to get to it, so it looks like it will be there for a good while now.
My RSM .458 Lott, I know is nothing special as far as others out there, and it's just a production rifle, but to me, it feels good in my hands, shoots good, and won't give me a heart attack if the stock gets scratched.

I have the CZ 458 Safari Classic Lott and that rifle shoots a 1.5" three shot group with IMR4320 powder and the 500 gr bullets go 2266 FPS. The stock is Laminated and the rifle is balanced.

It can kill any aminal in the world

I have used extensively a CZ 458 Lott from a very good friend of mine, we even took that rifle to Africa. Originally chambered in 458 Win, the rifle is a non-sense hunting machine. Accurate, stout and a pleasure to shoot, especially since it's on the heavy weight.

Integral scope bases helped a lot.

While I have personal preference for the Ruger, I'll no hesitate to have a CZ.

i have a M77 in .458 lott and it shoots very well. recoil is manageable and it shoots to point of aim. it points well and is quick to get on target. i like it better than my previous CZ550 american safari, but i am a big fan of M77 rifles. i have never fired a #1 in a heavy caliber. the only loads i have tried in the M77 are 500 grain hornady.

I have a cz550 in 458 and a Ruger #1 in 450 3 1/4 and I like using them both. The recoil is about the same in each. The CZ on occassions has feeding problems when I am in a hurry, and this is being fixed at the moment. Ihave considered having it rechambered to the lott, but why? I have all the cases and dies for the 458 Win and it does everything I want. I have fired a couple of 458Lotts and there is a felt increase in the recoil, but not enough to putyouoff. They were quite comfortableto fire.
