ALL WEATHER DOUBLE??
      #67227 - 17/12/06 12:03 AM

I have a friend who wishes to go on an Alaskan Brown bear hunt in Alaska in 2008.As most know the weather there is obscene with sun, heavy rain, sleet, all possible in a matter of hours.

Any suggestions on weatherizing a Merkel Double to with stand that environment.I would be conerned about the innards of the boxlock action as well as the wood and rust starting in the barrels.

If this is not possible I will revert to my synthetic 416 Rem bolt. But the 500 Double would sure be more comfortable following a big bear into the alders----

Searcy made a stainless steel plastic stock field grade model several years ago, but no one ordered one so he sold the prototype and was done with it.

One of the Cameroon PHs bought a Krieghoff double and it was essentially destroyed after one season. He had to get all the rust cleaned off and had a teflon-type finish put on the outside. I understand that some of the vintage guns used gold-plated internals to deal with the corrosion issue for surfaces that were hard to reach.

For a 14 day hunt it might be more practical for your friend to do his best to keep the gun oiled but to just plan on getting it reblued and the stock refinished upon his return.

I use my 9.3 double in Southeast Alaska every other year or so. I find wax makes a better external protector than oil for wet Alaskan weather. Renaissance wax works well for me, but there are others. Just put a light coating on all metal and wood surfaces and wipe off the excess. Works like a charm. Much more durable than oil.

Wipe it down with Eezox, including the bores. It's the best rust preventitive I've found. www.eezox.com

hoppdoc:
Chasseur's advice is sterling for the exterior, but I would go further and strip the locks, polishing any rough surfaces (being careful not to touch any tolerance-critical surfaces), then coat everything with a thin film of water-proof corrosion-inhibitor, and re-assemble. I do this as a matter of course with any new acquisition, doubles included, as it is not uncommon when hunting here in Australia's monsoon tropics to get caught out in an absolute drencher of a storm, and the heat and humidity are extremely unforgiving.

I make my own concoction, a 50:50 mixture of uncolored waterproof grease and high-grade light machine oil. I use Al-Com No.2 grease made by Molybond, and german light machine oil or Singer sewing-machine oil. It takes a bit of shaking to get them to mix, but the resultant 'honey' sticks like the proverbial, won't dry out, and resists wash-off more than any commercially-available product in my experience. It is the perfect lube, too. I do DG internals and bolt-gun barrels (in the barrel-channel) about every other year, never had a single speck of rust.

This stuff is excellent for wiping down the collection pieces prior to our monthly display meetings, where valuable arms are handled by dozens of enthusiasts all night! Should take the Alaskan wilderness in its stride!

Also, a parting thought. The relatively new lanolin products should be pretty good for external metal-work protection too, they reportedly coat ship's propellors to prevent fouling! Not sure what is available in the States, but here we have Lanocote (UK), Lanoguard (NZ), and Lanotec (Aust), grease-tub or spray-can.

Hope this helps.

Marrakai,
what about that tin of wax I sent you a couple of years ago?
How did it work out with the tropics and mildew and rust ?
It works down here in the south .

Yep, its about a third gone, the leather DR cases got most of it so far, and my two main shotguns for the goose swamps (a Cashmore sidelock and a Greener Empire). No mildew whatsoever.

Can we plug the product here? Beckett's Clear Microcrystalline Wax Polish. Formulated to meet the requirements of museum conservators, silicone free, pH neutral. ..and home-grown, if you're a sand-groper (made in WA).

Good stuff!
