new cartridge question
      #67089 - 15/12/06 05:20 AM

Hello all,

A question to check my understanding: I saw the other day that Ruger has or is about to launch their proprietary .375 Ruger cartridge. In their efforts to match the venerable .375 H and H albeit in a standard length offering won't they have to crank up the operating pressures? Is this desirable? On a related note, my tattered copy of "Cartridges of the World" has a section in the back where it discusses the new offerings by H and H; namely the .400 and .465.

If I read it right the essay suggested the .400 was a development of the .375 existing case with the neck brought back so the projectile would not invade the powder chamber and it would also offer a secure hold to deal with the elevated recoil levels. It went on to note that H and H was getting chrony readings of approx 2500 fps "reflecting the potential within the old cartridge". Again, does this mean the existing .375 case can create higher velocities with say a 300 grain bullet? Thus, if the case can launch a bullet fully 1/3 heavier than a standard 300 grainer are they raising the pressures to do so? Again, is this desirous for intended applications?

Finally, I am involved with a custom project whereby my dad and I are having a matched pair of rifles made and we are traveling to NH, USA this weekend to the Empire Rifles headquarters to inspect two actions. I will report on this next week.

Merry Christmas!

Jeff

Jeff

Whilst I am only guessing here, I seriously doubt if Holland and Holland are achieving anything like 2500 fps with a 400 grain bullet in the 400 H&H, the round more or less equals the .416 Remington but with the added inconvenience of a .411" bullet.

Users of the .416 Remington report being able to hit 2400 maybe even a little more, but even then I doubt 2500, this is the realm of the proper .416, the Rigby!!

As for the .375, with careful hand-loading 2600 fps can be achieved, possibly a little more, with a 300 grain bullet but in reality is not relly needed, many will say that the 2500 fps with most of the 300 grain bullets is too fast in any event and that penetration can suffer as a result due to too quick a bullet set up.

There are no free lunches, as you seek a higher velocity so too will you push up chamber pressure, a .375 loaded to 2600 fps with safe pressure at 75* air temp may be unsafe at Zambezi temperatures of 100* plus.

Just my opinion mind.

Personally, I do not see what the attraction is for having a 375 round in a nonmagnum receiver...

Sure the gun will be lighter, but the recoil is greater...

There are time to go fast and times to go moderately fast...in Africa, Moderately fast gets it done...Mine were loaded to 2550 in both soft and solid and did the job well...

I doubt if the 400H&H and the 465 H&H will get off the ground very far in the US...the 400 has a less desirable size of .411 instead of the popular .416 and the cost of components will be high...If you want a bolt 465H&H...the question is why...there are lots of 458 caliber bolt guns that get the job done in good fashion...the 458 Win, the 458 Lott, and lots more...

Let us know what you find at Empire..

I intend to buy a 375 Ruger when one becomes available. I don't necessarily think that it's going to do anything better in a practical sense than the 375 H&H will, I'm just interested experimenting, etc.

As I promised here is my brief report from my visit to Empire Rifles:

It is a well-run firm with knowledgeable people. George Sandmann (owner) certainly knows his stuff and offered us good info without crappy high pressure sales. His product seems first rate and he was able to explain his design to us in non-technical terms that did not lose the power of his message. we intend to use his actions in our custom rifle project.

I recommend him. see him at www.empirerifles.com

Cheers

I see these guys every year at SCI and they make a fine rifle, and your observation about the lack of high pressure sales tactics is sopt on ... they are fine fellows and very knowlegable indeed!

good luck with your project!

Ruger's new 375 will not do anything the old 375/338 can do. Except now you can buy factory ammo.

Per Boddington, the new 375 can be put in a standard size action, hold the same number rounds, and shoot the same velocity with a 20" barrel. With a 24" barrel it can shoot 200 fps faster!!

A light handy 375H&H equivilent.I am curious about the pressures as well. But if all the propaganda is correct then I think I want one for an African bolt gun!!
