I know what a 45-70 in a #1-S can do I've had two of them, but I want to try something new I don't know much about the Big 9.3.How close is it to the 375 H&H in proformance.Anything you can tell me about this cartridge I would appreciate it.Anyone else getting on in the #1-S? Thanks,Dave.

I have had a No1 in 45/70 for about 30 years. For the last several years I have been using a 9,3x74R Double rifle.
I feel the 9,3 is everybit as effective as the 375 H&H IMHO.
I have taken a lot of game with my 9,3, including giraffe cape buff and elephant.

The 9,3x74R would be an excellent calibre for the No1.

NE450No2--
Not to be in disagreement but I will be the devils advocate here.I would think that a 375H&H at 2500 fps moving 250 fps faster would hit harder and penetrate deeper than a .363 bullet at 2250 fps with the same bullet type. I realize that there would be no difference compared to the 375 Flanged moving at the same speed.

I have no data or information to support that thought just concern over penetration of a 9.3 cartridge 250 fps slower and with 1000 ft/pnds less energy.Granted these parameters don't define penetration but they contribute signifigantly none the less.

I have no experience with the 9.3 and well may buy one but am concerned whether that cushion of 250 extra fps gives more reliable killing ability.

No doubt the 375 H&H is "more powerful" than the 9,3x62 and the 9,3x74R.
It shoots a little bigger, little heavier bullet, a little faster.

However many people who have used both report no difference in field performance.
Some even suggest down loading the 375 H&H for better results.

All I can say is that I have had excellent success with the 9,3x74R.

It is truly splitting hairs but personally I think of the
9.3 x 74R as a Double Rifle version of the 35 Whelen, which I like alot. Both shoot 250 gr bullets around 2400 and 286 & 300 gr around 2250. There certainly no flies on the
35 Whelen!! Thats a great caliber.

IMHO, those who suggest down loading the 375 H&H for better results should be changing up to a better bullet!

The 9.3 x 74 is a very practical single-shot rifle chambering because it is long and slender, and can be made up into a very slim, light stalking rifle. The chamber walls can retain plenty of meat, putting the weight in the right place for good balance and sweet handling. Not sure about the Ruger No.1, a little chunky for my liking, but a Scheiring top-lever single which Vic P_ had made for him in this calibre a few years ago was absolutely marvellous!

If I lived in the US and hunted mainly North American game, there would be one in my gunsafe for sure! (prob'ly a double, though!)

Marrakai is right!!

I'm getting that rifle itch again and wanting something different to hunt with.A 9.3 x 74R Double would make a great all round gun for Western game, elk, moose, boar, and maybe even big bear encounters!! I have a 35 Whelen bolt with similar ballistics thats fun!!

I think its killing power may be augmented in the states by a good premium soft point bullet opening at lower velocities. The Whelen likes Barnes solid X bullets but thats not an option with Double rifles.North Fork has a 286 gr coming soon. Any soft point preference by experience or suggestions, anyone?

I've used my 9.3x74R double on game here and in Africa.

My rifle was regulated for the Norma 285 Oryx factory round. I didn't have time to work up any other loads for it before this last hunt in Africa and the fall hunting seasons here.

The 9.3x74R loaded with the Oryx bullets performed flawlessly on a very nice Chobe bush buck at 165 yards from my scoped double. And likewise on 2 white tail deer as fast as I could pull the second trigger here this fall. Last deer season I shot 3 white tails with the 9.3x74R. Lined a couple of does up and got both with one shot. The other was a fairly long shot for our area, but the 9.3 handled it well (about 195 yards).

I'm working up a 286 North Fork load for the 9.3x74R in my single shot Hubertus and my 9.3x64 bolt gun. From all reports, the North Forks should be a great round in both calibers.

I love the 9.3 caliber rifles. If I didn't have the 9.3x74R barrel for my Hubertus single shot, I'd buy the Ruger #1 in this caliber as soon as it was avaialble.

After testing several (5) different .375's and (3) .35's, along with my 9.3x62, I've decided to reduce my loadings (or shorten the chamber to 57mm)) on my .375/06IMP to run factory level 9.3x62 ballistics or there-abouts. The extra 200 or 300fps doesn't seem to amount to anything according to guys who've used them pretty much side by side on the same game in Africa.
: The lighter loads in the 9.3x74 and 9.3x62 are very much more pleasant to shoot, promote more practise and are easier all the way around. With my own self-imposed range limitations, I really don't need 2,550fps with 285gr.Speer bullets or 2,475fps with 300's.

Hoppdoc. get yourself a 9.3 double or single shot. You will enjoy it. But try to remember to not buy 363 bullets for it. Load the .366 bullets. They don't rattle down the tubes as badly. RZ

Geez, did you have to tell him.

I was waiting for him to post his 3 MOA Targets and get us to work out why his gun wasn't shooting !!!

Sorry 500. I just couldn't resist. Someone like him told me Makarov bullets couldn't work for plinkers and I just was into proving people wrong. I'll let it be next time. RZ
