ok, lets start with sights and a decelerator..
      #6702 - 09/01/04 06:21 PM

OK, I have the No. 1, now to make it a shooter.

initially, I'll be shooting it open, and would like to invest in a set of good sights that can be used as backup in case of scope failure later on...

I'd like a from ghost ring, and I'm torn between just the factory (or similar) rear and a peep... any suggestions/opinions? also, WHERE to get this stuff, GU in Omaha might have some stuff, but I haven't been up there in a few weeks...

as for a decelerator... who has them cheapest!?!?!?

any/all help appreciated!

Are you going to do your own pad? If so, Brownells is a good source and, if you have a commercial account the price is right.

If you're going to have a 'smith install the pad, you'll find many of them stock the Deccelerator due to its popularity. There is a red version out now if that tickles your fancy.

Another benefit to the Deccelerator is it is one of the pads that can be leather wrapped quite nicely if you're feeling handy with your hands. Sure looks a cut above.

As for sights, we have recently been discussing this very subject. See the thread, "Sighting Survey", at

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=single&Number=6474&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

Nick Adams lends a good deal of info on regarding irons and such.

My newest big bore #1 sports an NECG rear aperture combined with their 3/32" white bead up front. Actually, I am currently 'beadless' as I just shot the damn thing off into outer space! Replacement is on the way...

My preference with the NECG rear is the .125" aperture disk (it comes with 2, the other being .093"). Not a ghost ring, but a nice happy medium for me.

The NECG works well for me but I sure wish it weren't so painful to the eyes. Surely the boys at New England could give the thing a bit more beauty and grace.

Check out the thread above and shoot well tomorrow.

Regards

re: the rear aperatures aesthetics... if you have some closeups or know where to find them post them up... my brother restores cars and builds hot-rods/racers... I suspect we could poweder-coat at least some of the surfaces to match the bluing on the No. 1s... the other would be to find someone to annodize them black... need to be careful of the precision parts though, but again, I think it can be done...

I just like the ghost ring fronts (I think that's the right term... big circle with a post in the middle?)

Hi:

Well, here's my opinion. On Ruger's big-bore #1s (the Tropicals), resist the urge to scope it with hi-power magnification. Stick with low-power scopes like the 1-4x, 1.5-5x, or 1.75-5x. In the first place, except for load development, you really don't need the kind of big-ass objective bell these scopes come with, nor all that magnification. Secondly, a huge scope gunks up the balance and handling of the gun. Their size causes a bad cheek/stock weld because you have to mount them in higher rings. Lastly, if esthetics matter, to me these bigger scopes just don't look right hitched to the slim lines of a #1. A VERY compact 2x7 is the largest I'd go with.

Iron sights (peeps/apertures)? Well, as Holmes & I discussed in a separate thread on SSs, Brownell's catalog has a bunch. But only certain apertures will fit Ruger's integral quarter-rib mounts (unless you find a replacement q-r for it, like the Mould's q-r, which uses Weaver-style cross-slots). Frankly, none are all that impressive for one reason or another. Although I like the style and sturdiness of the XS "ghost ring," I'm going to try to work with the NEGC aperture made for Weaver-bases. We'll see.

Whatever you choose, Brownell's also carries NEGC replacement front sights for Ruger #1s & 77s - 5 sights in different heights. These sport an easily-seen 3/32 white bead. Some feel the 3/32 bead is too large for aperture use on big game beyond 100yds, but actually for most shots you're likely to take with iron sights, the combo of a good aperture and the NEGC front sight is probably fine for offhand shots out to 150yds (maybe 200yds) if you've practiced enough from decent field positions. Don't do all you're shooting off the bench.

I like the decelerators. My preference is for at least 1" thick in 300mags and up. They're offered in black as well as the more traditional big-bore flavor of red, which you see on British-style African rifles.

first things first... yeah, smaller scope is it! I have a VX-II 2-7x33 that WOULD work, but its probably better suited to a 35 Whelen or something similar (the W will hopefully join the collection next month) if not, it will end up on the M98 30-06. I'd like a VX-III in 1.5-5~ish.

beyond that, I don't mind the stock aft sight, so I might just get a ring for the front and call it good, seeing as how I'll be scoping it anyway.

the OEM recoil pad is pretty pathetic, its hard and thin. I think I can do the work myself (dad's done at least a dozen shotguns at one time or another...) so I just need to find one... I also think that I could use an extra 1/2 to 1 inch of LOP, so the deeper pad can't hurt!

as I said elsewhere, I'd like to get or have made some form of shoulder "girdle" (both side have substantial injuries), and while the one or two shots in the field aren't any problem, getting pounded on the bench during zero-ing sessions and 40-round multi-posture range sessions could lead to a flinch pretty easily, and that's something I DON'T want. I've seen neoprene shoulder braces that might do the trick, but there's got to be something somewhere made for people who benchrest 30-378s!

as I said yesterday, two shots down, thousands to go!

For accurizing #1s, if you find yours needs it, I described in another post all the things done to mine, including installation of the Hicks' "Accurizer."

Check out the thread currently running, entitled "On SS Accuracy."
